Consumer vs HEDT Zen 2

I am curious to see how many HEDT peeps we got and what they think of the Ryzen 38xx possibly being 5Ghz while the ThreadRipper would be 4.5 to 4.7Ghz.  Which one would you pick if you had a DAW and no video editing.

I wouldn't even care about zen 2, because I'm on the used market anyway so I will wait for like 3 years to get 1 of those. Yeah I'm pumped up too because i want to see how AMD can change Intel in the price department, heck even nvidia.

I doubt that Ryzen 3xx0 will be a complete gamechanger, CPUs haven’t progressed that far for a long time. My i5 4460 still holds up with a 1660 which is far more powerful than the 780 Ti released a year before the i5, and similar to the 980 Ti released a bit after. GPUs have gotten much better, while CPUs haven’t really since Sandy Bridge.

Ya dude, Im in a weird situation.  I honestly have no reason to upgarde but since its been 7 almost 8 years since I upgarded I feel now is a good time.  I just run a DAW and gaming of course.  I doubt I will need more then 32 threads for DAW.  So TR would be a waiste of money, however I like the octa channel memory and I would need 64GB kit.

It can be a game changer for the industry (not sure if it's the right word), doesn't have to be a game changer architecturally

For that, just pick up an i5 or Ryzen 5 and 16 gigs of ram. My i5 runs FL studio just fine. For audio production, you might as well invest in some new headphones and a headphone amp.

Well if game developers have more people that uses more than 4 cores maybe the situations will differ. I mean you still use 4 cores CPU why? Because you have no reason to upgrade how about game developers start using 6 cores would you still hold on to the I5 this long? Maybe yes because money, maybe not because you don't want stutter or any kind of unpleasant experience while playing the game.

I'm also very exited to upgrade to zen 2, i plan on getting either the r9 3850x or whatever the top chip ends on being. But i recommend tuning down on the expectations, 5ghz is a big number.

For example i hope for 4.5ghz, still way higher than my current 3.7ghz, and if it ends up being 5ghz i will be more than happy, but if it ends up being 4.6ghz i won't be disappointed either.

I only see your reply if you @ me.

Well everyone’s different, but I don’t play many games. Just War Thunder and Apex. I can play those at max/almost max 1440p respectively so there’s no reason to get a new CPU.

I think it would get to 5ghz, but IDK about the 16c to be able to get there,i mean look at R5 and R7.

Well higher resolutions mean need more gpu power and those titles going to have a really unstable fps if you're in a fight or really wide open situations.  But talking about potential is like 3 years or maybe 5 more years that game developers will use 6cores as a base, now it's only 6threads if I remembered correctly.

I already have audio interface and HP's ...... When I dont overclock the CPU,  my Sonar Platinum with 35 real time VSTi's CPU usage goes to 100 percent and crashes as soon as you hit play.  When I overclock like you see in my sig then that 100 percent choke out becomes 40 to 60 percent usage and no choke out.  Maybe if I ran 75 real time VSTI's then a Ryzen 16 core would suffice.
