Huawei may be gearing up to take on the new iPads and other flagship phones.

Mishaal Rahman, Editor in Chief of XDA may have information on a slew of new devices coming from Huawei/Honor that will use the HiSilicon Kirin 980 chips, some of which are highly likely to be Tablets. The 980 is right up there with the SD855 and can trade blows with Apple's A12 bionic (not the 12x). While Android doesn't have the best track record when it comes to tablets, it will at least be nice to see a device using an actual flagship processor instead of a previous gen/mid-range in a "premium package" (ie Samsung's offerings). Their Mediapads are generally touted as some of the best android tablets you can get in terms of shear quality.

The editor in chief of XDA, Mishaal Rahman, has posted a thread on Twitter starting with the phrase: "Upcoming Huawei/Honor Kirin 980 flagship devices". What follows is a list of model numbers associated with a raft of specs, including their screen sizes. As some allegedly measure 6.27 or 6.39 inches, it may be reasonable to assume that they are phones. However, three others are associated with screen sizes of between 8.4 and 10.7 inches.

Therefore, it appears Rahman has secured leaks on upcoming premium devices from the brands Honor or Huawei, some of which are tablets. On the other hand, the editor himself also admits that "all the info was mined from [a source]" that he could not disclose, and, furthermore, that he may have misinterpreted some of what was said on this subject.

Taking Rahman's new leak as read, it gives details on a total of 7 putative model numbers: SEA; YAL; YALZX; SCM; RSN, & VRD. The last 3 of these are the apparent new tablets. They are linked to battery, camera and screen-size specs, although these details are incomplete in some cases. The "new devices" are spec'd as follows:

  • RSN-AL00/W09: 8.4" 1600x2560; 4200mAh; ?
  • SCM-AL09/W09/Z00: 10.7" 1600x2560; 7500mAh; S5K3L6/OV13855 (13MP), HI846/S5K4H7 (8MP)
  • SEA-AL10/TL10: 6.39" 1080x2340; 3500mAh; IMX576 (25MP), IMX380 (12.3MP), IMX586 (48MP), IMX316 (TOF)
  • VRD-AL09/W09/X9/Z00: 8.4" 1600x2560 4200mAh; S5K3L6/OV13855 (13MP), HI846/S5K4H7 (8MP)
  • YAL-AL00/LX1/TL00: 6.26" 1080x2340; 3750mAh; IMX576 (25MP), IMX616 (32MP), IMX582 (48MP), IMX586 (48MP), IMX481/OV16885 (16MP), GC2375/OV02A10 (2MP)
  • YALZX-AL10/LX1: ?; 4000mAh; IMX616 (32MP), IMX586(48MP), IMX481/OV16885 (16MP), GC2375/OV02A10 (2MP)

Based on this, one or two have the makings of impressive flagships - especially YAL, with its listed total of 7 camera modules. None of them match up to the specs of existing Kirin 980 devices; therefore, (particularly given the existence of relatively new Sony IMX 48MP sensors that are not found even in the P30 line) they just may be upcoming flagships.

In fact, YAL and YALZX's 'specs' dovetail nicely with pre-existing rumors concerning the imminent Honor 20 series. On the other hand, the existence of 2 different top-end camera sensors on either of these phones is less than likely. Then again, there is an outside chance that these specs refer to new foldables that are to come after the Mate X at some point.

With all the big players running on 7nm and Samsung close behind on their own 8nm, the gap between flagships is slowly shrinking which hopefully means we're getting to a point where innovation is going to matter more than processing power since they are all very very similar, which could explain why folding phones have started popping up.

 

As always take these with a grain of salt since they are "leaks" and may not be accurate, however it is promising that one of them does share parallels with the Honor20 rumours.

 

Say what you like about the scandals surrounding Huawei, if these leaks are true, it's hopefully going to shake up the market a bit.

They may always be niche in the American market because of the COMMYS SPYIN ON US YALL but I love my matebook x pro as it's 1/3rd the cost of a macbook and is better in every way except OS

Getting hackingtosh on laptops is a pain in the ass, given most of the components are soldered. I think the XPS13 has decent if not full support, but anything rare and not very popular is a pain to get working right. That's disregarding the proprietary apple stuff like gestures and touchID.

I am looking for a tablet to replace my aging Sony Z4 tablet.

10.7" screen with a resolution of 2560x1600 sounds great. Since I mostly use my tablet for watching videos and reading comics, I want something more wide-screen than 4:3 like the iPads. The Tab 5e would have been great if it weren't for the mid-range SoC and the lack of headphone jack. Hopefully Huawei includes a 3.5mm jack, but I probably shouldn't get my hopes up.

While the 4:3 aspect ratio isn't as great for watching movies, it's amazing for reading.  Normal books, webpages, comics.  

Since I mainly use my tablet to draw and read, having a 16:9 tablet is pure hell to me.

Currently focusing on my video game collection.

It doesn't matter what you play games on, just play good games you enjoy.

I feel the main issue with android tablets isn’t so much the specs, but the general lack of an ecosystem to support them. 

 

For one, the ipad has many quality apps going fo it. It’s not common, but you have people able to edit videos, write, record podcasts, draw, do a bunch of productive stuff on it, despite criticisms like not having a file manager or being able to plug in external drives. This is what justifies the price of a premium iPad Pro for these users and elevates it beyond simply being a mere Netflix and facebook browsing device. 

 

What exactly would an android tablet, whatever the brand, have going for it besides price?

Google really just doesn't know how to support Android on anything that isn't a phone.

 

It's still wild that, to this day, there's no way to limit browsing the Play Store to just tablet-native apps.  You'll occasionally see a section, but you're supposed to 'just know' that an app has tablet support.  And instead of encouraging developers to write full interfaces designed for tablets, Google just said "here, add a few lines of code so your phone app scales."  You end up with something that's only marginally better than running the smartphone version.

 

I'd also say Google hasn't done enough to foster development of Android tablets.  Not that it can force its partners to make the hardware it wants, but it feels like Google was content to let Android tablets devolve into the "race to the bottom" strategy you see in the Windows PC market.  So there are lots of sub-$100 glorified Netflix viewers, but few mid-range or high-end tablets you'd actually want to use for more.  Google basically handed a large chunk of the tablet market to Apple on a silver platter.

 

The kicker is seeing that Google does similar things for smartwatches, for TVs... it offers only the barest of support, and it lets its entries in the category languish while competitors (Apple and Samsung in smartwatches, LG and Samsung in TVs) have free rein.  In that sense, it's a bit like Microsoft was with Windows Mobile -- it assumes that a monopoly in one area automatically translates to dominance in others, and doesn't realize that it actually needs to put in effort.
