Broke Student

Hey so as the title suggests, I'm a student and I'm low on cash. I'm a physics student and I don't have enough free time for a traditional part time job because they want more flexibility. I've been rejected from online tutoring and I got to a uni in a fairly small town so I'm not sure how I'll get on doing tutoring in the local area given 1/3 of the town are students.

 

I'm basically looking for any suggestions for how to make money (I'm in the UK) that I haven't thought of.

There isn't any job you could do? Try looking for those simple delivery jobs. I was a student too, but I was delivering food by car in my spare time. Easiest job ever. Didn't pay much, but it was still something to live from.

Maybe sell food in your uni and just ask to put it in the canteen, basically selling without paying for it except they will sell it for how much they judge it will profit and give you the rest of the money you said how much it worth.

I think there are food safety laws against this in the UK. Also we don't really have a canteen just a lot of uni owned cafes

I might need to look into this. We have deliveroo in my town but I'd have to cycle (don't have a car) and I am asthmatic but this may end up being a last resort.

OK I didn't know that, but if you can't do it in the uni, you can also do it outside of uni. Well that sucks, if its here they will just say yes because everyone is nice enough, not exactly everyone.

That's a good idea. I don't really know how deliveroo works, but I think you can choose which orders to accept so you could choose to only accept orders within a 5 mile range for example.

 

There are delivery companies that don't use bikes or scooters, but cars. you don't have to use your own car. They will provide a car for you. At least.. that's how it was for me. I don't live in a big city so cars are a very good option to deliver food in a 30+ mile radius plus it'll be a good alternative instead of a bike.

Yeah the UK generally has very high food standards and you have to have qualifications to do anything more than a bake sale

here for delivery is provided by the company (depends on what thing do you get to deliver). so yeah deliveroo is a good idea, even motorcycle is fine.

If you've got a car then you could do something like pizza delivery. My girlfriend did this at uni and made a fair amount of money working at a pizza hut.

 

If you don't then you're pretty fucked unless you have experience. I used to work at Screwfix whilst at uni but got my job through nepotism so it wasn't hard to get. Before that I worked at festivals during summer to make a few pennies but it really wasn't anything much, would make about £200 for a weekend but when you factor in your expenses the profit is negligible. 

 

What I'd do is get your overdraft maxed out if you need an immediate injection. You'll pay it off easily once you get a graduate job. My overdraft was £4k when I left uni but I had moved it to a savings account to accrue interest.

It might seem lame because you're in university, but seriously consider stuff like lawn care, assistance with gardening, offering yourself as a handyman to fix small things, replace bulbs, etc, to your neighbours.

 

I'd also see if you can't get a job in Fast Food. Even without flexibility they can sometimes use an extra hand here or there.

 

Offer private tutoring. Offer PC Building or whatever other tech skills you got (PC Repair/software troubleshooting, etc). Post these things in the student facilities and at school on the community boards.

A few of my classmates are fabulously weathly this way. They have no jobs but plenty cash.

Problem is that these jobs don't exist near my uni town. We're a town of about 24k incl. students. Not a big city.

You work in places like the school library & you’re allowed to study when not helping people.

Check your local (non-school) library as well. Most libraries will hire Students to shelve books. Often they have very flexible hours.

Work study is through the university it's funded by the government up to a certain point so you will be paid more than usual to offset the low hours

Freelance Web design(you can literally just sell shit you make with squarespace or WIX if you want), 3D printing on demand if you have one of those, flipping PCs is another thing you could do

Please note that you can't post a request for donations on the forums. Though I imagine putting a link in your status update might be okay.

 

Personally, I'd be hard pressed to merit donating to someone in such a case. Nothing against them, but I was a broke-ass student once too. I got a student loan and worked hard for it (still paying it off).

 

If the OP is in actual dire financial straits (rather than, say, simply wanting extra money for PC components, video games, going out, etc), they should visit the financial aid office at their university (every university has one). Look at what grants, scholarships, bursaries, and free/low interest loans might be available.

 

Or try and get a regular job, and just figure out the schedule thing. Apply at places, be upfront with your schedule, don't lie, but also see if you can be more flexible with your schedule.
