Asus Arez Strix Radeon RX VEGA56 vs ROG

TheNephilim

My Asus HD7970 died today, after many years of good service. So I'm looking for a replacement. I was hoping to upgrade when the Navi lineup was available. However, those cards won't be available for a while.

So I was looking into a Vega 56 as a replacement. Other options include a 590 or Vega 64, but the 56 has a nice price (~325 euro). I'd like to stick to AMD.

Reason I opened a topic here, is to find out if the Arez card is a good option and if issues with older ROG card are fixed in this newer card.

V56 is the best compromize of all Worlds, between price, power consumption.

The V64 is a bit stronger but at the cost of way higher powerconsumption...

So the middle is the best, as always ;)

That's what I was thinking too, so it seems like a good option indeed. But are problems with VRM and such solved in the Arez version?

Hi!

I am looking for a gpu myself for a friend's system.

Where exaktly do you live in Europe? In Austria you can order a 1660ti for about 270€. Is a Vega 56 really that much faster than a 1660ti?

My Rig / Buildlogs:  ❄️ SNOWFLAKE ❄️ FROSTBITE ❄️

CPU: Ryzen 5 3600   Cooler: Corsair H115i Platinum   RAM: Corsair Vengence RGB Pro 16GB @3200   Mobo: Asus Prime X470 Pro

Did you find the answer? That's the same question I was trying to find the answer to.

Vega 56 beats the 1070ti now for the most part, and is fairly close to the 2060 as well. The key here isn't the performance, it's maybe 10-15% better. But what is important is vram. 6gb vram is shaky even at 1080p. 2 years down the line and we'll have reached 6gb at 1080p consistently, no doubt about it. Vega 56 has 8gb vram with HBCC as backup. That is more than enough for it to last as long as it's performance will allow it to, without any horrible dips.

Look at cards like the 780ti, even more recent stuff like the 1060 3gb. Don't take the risk. Nvidia are once again going to play that game with the 4gb on the new 1650. It's not good enough. Meanwhile cards like AMD's R9 290x have lasted ages without struggling, and are still hanging on even now more than 5 years after release. If you want a consistent, better overall package over time then vega 56 is a stronger option than the 2060, forget the 1660ti.

And another thing to keep in mind:
We are at the end of this Console's generation lifetime.

That said, with the next generation you can expect a jump in VRAM Consumption, much like it was from XBox360/PS3 to PS4 and XBoner.

8GiB right now is enough because the Consoles only have 8GiB VRAM (XBoner X 12).

With the next Generation it might be only a slight increase to 12, but also 16, 24 and 32GiB RAM is possible.

THe larger the RAM of the Consoles, the more f*d you are with low VRAM Cards.

I bought the Asus Arez Strix Radeon RX VEGA56, should arrive today.

From why I could gather, the VRM-issues with the ROG-edition are no longer present in the Arez-edition. The product page for the latter mentions improved PCB while the first does not.

The Arez branding products are pretty much the very same as ROG branding ones.

A year ago nVidia tried to force ASUS to make ROG exclusive to nVidia therefore ASUS created the Arez branding for their AMD Radeon products however nVidia's plan failed and ASUS killed the Arez branding to resume with its much more popular ROG across the board.

What you bought is a relic per se... a ROG Strix on different branding.

Arez branding is because of the Geforce Partner Programme because nVidia had forbidden to use the same Name with their products and competing products.
