Copied files only half the size

Hi,

Just now I copied all files on a external HDD over to my laptop. The HDD has about 77.4Gb space occupied, yet after copying all folders on that drive into a single folder on my desktop that folder with all the files in it is only 39.5Gb big. It's too much data to go through by hand, checking if every file is there and not corrupted. So is this normal behavior? Both the internal and external drives have NTFS file systems.

Thanks in advance!

Is your external HDD formatted as FAT32/VFAT, or do you have compression enabled on your laptop?

I'm not sure about both of those things. How do I check?

Open Explorer, right-click your external HDD, click on Properties and then check what it says as the filesystem.

I'm not sure about compression, but the drive is NTFS

Well, then I can't say off-hand what the issue is.

Probably some hidden folders etc.

Did you clone the external HDD files, or did you just select everything and then did ctrl+c?

Because i know that you can clone the files from the drive with some CommandPrompt command or something like that.

I only see your reply if you @ me.

can you open properties for both the drive and the folder and compare the number of files? that will explain if there are some missing.

The external HDD has a little over double the amount of files and folders

I would recommend using something 3rd party when moving a lot of files. My go-to for that kind of backupping is FreeFileSync.
