What should I update first?

Coming across some extra money (selling parts from a HP z640) and looking to upgrade my PC. I did a bit of research, and I think the correct way is to update my CPU first but what are your thoughts?

 

Specs:

I5-2500k (OC to 4.2) watercooled (H100i v2)

ASRock Extreme4 Z77 MB

2x2GB & 2x4GB DDR3 1600 (PC312800) Gskill Ram

ASUS Strix GTX 1080

256 SSD

850W PSU

 

I think my best options are changing out the i5-2500k with either a sandy or ivy I7-k or upgrading the RAM to 16GB.

Ryzen just becomes more affordable by the day, the value of the 2600 is pretty great.

If not, Ryzen 2600 of course.

 

Edit:  Looking at that 1080.. you aren't a stranger to spending money.  What's your budget?

I'd go as far as waiting another 2 months for Ryzen 3000 series.

I searched into some other threads that ran 2500k's and saw that upgrading to i7-2700k or i7-3300k is a good deal, especially if you buy the CPU's used.

 

To all the others suggesting the Ryzen series. Unfortunately I'd like to stay within Intel products as a preference. I'm also on the fence of changing the board for newer CPUs since the price for DDR4 ram is still pretty expensive.

You can get an i7-3770k for around $200 on ebay not a bad deal, 16GB of DDR3 1866 is around $80-$100 depending on brand. As for DDR4 ram its $100 for 16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000mhz, and others are even cheaper. DDR4 prices are actually pretty much retail now.

He said he has a MC near him, so the Ryzen 1600 at $79.99 with $30 off.... I don't know what is more than annihilate

You do realize that staying Intel while a 6core, 12 thread Ryzen 5 1600 is $49... is kind of ridiculous.

 

I have both, have had both, and both can suck and be awesome, just gotta find the deals.

I didn't mean it's a good deal in the sense that he couldn't do better. It's a good deal in the sense that a lot of older gen i7s are usually sold at more or really close to their original retail prices. He should definitely upgrade to an 2600 or more modern cpu.

The best option all around would be to upgrade to a Ryzen cpu, the 2600 would blow that 3rd gen i7 out of the water, you can get a 2600 for $160, 16GB of DDR4 3000mhz ram for $100, and a motherboard for around $80 - $100. So $360 for a brand new modern rebuild or $300 for an old used i7 and some 1866mhz DDR3 ram. The Ryzen rebuild is the way to go.

even in terms of a good deal for an old CPU, that's more expensive than a 4770k at the $170 price point they're usually at, $200 for a CPU that old doesn't seem quite right.

 

The 2600k is at leas at a sensible price point, around $100.

It's been awhile since I've looked at used i7 prices but last time I did they were ridiculous, it's been a year or so ago when PC parts were through the roof.

Brand new Intel CPU prices are still insane where I'm from.

I'm not sure whether its shortage or whatever, but a mere i3-8100 costs the same as a R5 1600. 

 

There is just a general lack of "bang for buck" from Intel really, and you can't overclock the non-K chips to compensate for it either.

To be honest, my goal is performance per dollar. I have two other projects I'm working on that I'd like to use the money I sold towards (home server & niece's PC) which I'm currently budgeting. The 1080 was a purchase to upgrade my 970 so I can give it to my wife on her PC to experience some streaming.

To be perfectly honest, just a unsupported personal preference for Intels. I've had a desktop in the early years that didn't do so well.

And curious enough, @fasauceome & @SpookyCitrus, I see your personal builds in your signature are Intels. What made you build your PC with Intels rather than AMDs?

Look at their CPU's.  AMD doesn't have a solid competitor for the 8700K (8086 is an 8700K as well), it's the best bang for buck gaming CPU arguably.

 

Also note that while I use Intel like them, I built my secondary machine out of AMD.

My first CPU was Intel, that was pre Ryzen so Intel was the only sensible choice, then I won my current CPU in a giveaway. If I hadn't, I'd still have my 4790k right now and Ryzen would be my upgrade plan.

 

Edit: I too am getting a Ryzen CPU for a secondary PC as well

Looks like I have more thinking to do, thanks to everyone for the posts. The ryzen is looking like a better choice if I shell out more for a rebuild (which I had planned sometime into the far future).

 

I may consider reusing my current build as server components if I update to Ryzen. Any recommendations on CPU and motherboards?

B450 is the strongest budget option right now, the aorus offerings from gigabyte have really solid power delivery at a decent price. Otherwise, lower end MSI boards have nice big vrm heat sinks

I used AMD for years while I was in highschool and before I started working, My freshman year I built an FX-8350 rig that I used from 2012 until I upgraded to the system I have now. It was a great budget build and lasted 6 years, with only minor storage upgrades and a new GPU every 2 years. I upgraded to the system I have now after I landed a solid job and felt it was time to upgrade, I set a budget for myself and saved a paycheck for the build I wanted. The way I see it, it's all based on two things 1. Budget, if you are doing a budget build Ryzen is where it's at if you want to spend less money but also get good performance. If you have a more flexible budget and are looking for the best performance and aren't worried about budget too much then go with Intel. 2. Personal preference, which ever company you prefer it's up to you. I honestly would just wait if I were you, I'd put that $200 for the 3770k on the back burner and save up a little more to do the rebuild, even with the 3770k you'd still have a 25%- 30% bottleneck on that 1080 which will destroy your performance, it would barely improve your performance at all. Where as the Ryzen 5 2600 is 1%. It's up to you. That's just what I would do personally.

Thanks to everyone on the thread on their input. I've contemplated going AMD and looking into the builds using a Ryzen 5 2600 or 2600x.

 

I've decided to go against the 3rd Gen since I'm going to assume that the MB's will also move to PCIE 4.0. The 1080 I have is only 3.0, and wouldn't benefit. I'll probably do the same as Spooky and eventually wait for a paycheck and upgrade all at once.

If you have a Microcenter, go for their amazing $80 R5 1600 deal

 

Or, wait for Zen 2 - first 7nm CPUs!
