I got an invitation from a "3rd party" Amazon seller to test a mouse and I can't tell if it's legit or not. There isn't a link so I really just don't know.

I haven't ever received anything like this before so I have no clue just asking for help.

Here is the Email

If you have PO Box/parcel locker etc or some sort that doesn't give away your real address, why not. Maybe ask what brand?

Should I ask for a product page to verify it's even real?

After some fiddling with paypal I couldn't get it to work so they just sent an amazon card to order it that way. Seems pretty legit thus far.

Wait what?

He said it was free. What do you need PayPal or an Amazon Card for? You didn't send him an Amazon gift card, did you?

So, a guy emailed you, and is going to send you a gift card to pay for a mouse on Amazon? Did they show you the listing? How are you gonna know which one to buy?

He already sent the card and I ordered the mouse with it. He did show the listing it seemed like a pretty good mouse for the price. It's super obviously Chinese though. He was originally going to do a paypal payment but I have had issues with paypal for quite some time. I asked him which one and he verified it. It has pretty good ratings from others.

Why would this guy have you pay via Amazon gift card instead of just sending the unit directly to you?

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I need?

Honestly I have no clue. I have never done something like this before so I didn't know how it was done, though it did sound kind of weird. I have saved all of the emails in case something happens.

Fair enough - please make sure not to purchase the mouse until after you receive the gift card. And also make sure to only use the gift card for the purchase.

Yes, very odd. If he were part of the store selling the item, he should in theory be able to just send one out.

Perhaps they're just really new to giving out review samples, and maybe he doesn't know any better method.

Also, it artificially inflates the sales numbers... so there's that :P

I know its a weird thought but what if the product has a tracker???????

I mean there is always that risk because u arent gonna open up the mouse inside and check every component of it

And its not a big brand u can trust but as u mentioned its a chinese one

idk

all i know is there are some cruel people out there that will do this type of thing just to get ur address or whatever

Just beware

Because this way his review will come from a "verified purchase". It's a way to present reviews from free promotional products (potential conflict of interest) as an independent, verified customer review.

That makes sense.

Not sure how I feel about that. If the OP discloses he got it for free in his review, then I'd say that's okay, since I assume he'll make an honest review.

I am going to review it the exact same way I would if I bought it, so if it's garbage it's not getting a good review. I don't think it will be bad enough to warrant shitting on it though.

It still hasn't processed but the mouse was actually pretty nice for the price. It had a few things that were kind of unique about it. the only real problem I had with it is that it was too wide.

Edit: Here is the mouse https://www.amazon.com/UtechSmart-Venus-16400-Precision-Gaming/dp/B00FNKMVUO/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=gaming+mouse&qid=1555025152&s=electronics&sr=1-7#customerReviews
