HP is now offering Windows 7 as default on their system. Even touch screen ones, and tablets. HP has sent an e-mail to all it's customers about this 'exiting' news. And HP claims that this was by 'popular demand'.

To celebrate, they also offer 150$ 'saving' their computer:

hpbackwindows560px.jpg

In addition, even on touched enabled devices (all in ones, laptops, tablets), where you have Windows 8 as option, HP pushes for Windows 7.

Source: http://www.theverge.com/2014/1/20/5326844/hp-brings-back-windows-7-by-popular-demand

To me, it is 2 things:

1- HP always had problem with touch screen. Never been really good. At least the ones I personally tried. And I think they just gave up, as a way to save money and not invest more money in this. Also, it means less money on R&D, or no money at all, meaning higher profits numbers to please investors, especially on low PC sales. Looking how HP is actually NOT adapting to the new market, where their tablet is not only lack lackluster, but not even semi-interesting, shows that they don't want to adapt to the new market change. I think HP will be irrelevant soon, at the consumer PC level.

2- They are desperate for sales, and hope that going this path will boost sales. I don't think so. Because Dell, Lenovo, and possibly other OEMs, offer Windows 7 as option, and their sales are still down like crazy. Businesses just got their new computers as they recently migrated to Windows 7... and consumers are happy with their tablets or phones, or even current old computers as it fulfill their needs.

What do you think of all this? Do you think this is a wise choice for HP? Would you get an HP computer because of this?

I think it makes sense. A lot of general consumers (non techies) can't use windows 8 and get scared/confused. For us techies it doesn't matter though.

All you need to do on windows 8.1 is disable the stupid search and enable boot into desktop, then it becomes good operating system, faster than win7 n sheet.

This is pretty cool that they are offering Windows 7. Great for people who don't want to learn the new features and functions of Windows 8.

All I know is I just recently built a new PC and put my unused copy of Windows 7 Pro on it and after using nothing but Windows 8 and 8.1 for over a year it is so nice to go back to an OS that actually works on a desktop without having to rely on tweaks. I can't think of a single thing I miss when going from Windows 8.1 back to Windows 7.

how do we know it's the os? could it just be a shit computer or interfering, poorly written bloatware for the win8 environment?

It's because you have been using tweaks.. so avoiding Windows 8 the best you could.

If you learned Windows 8, you would not go back.

I used to strongly disagree with GoodBytes on this... but he's right.

It's not perfect, there are some niggling issues... but, it's better than the start menu. Most of the time I don't even need to use it anyway because I just need to press the Start button, type a few letters to search for what I want, hit enter and vóila! :)

Behold the glory of  an HP 625

I do have a slightly better version with a P560 @2.5GHz and also i slapped in additional 4 gigs of ram to make it run better.

HOWEVER this laptop is a stinking pile of crap that has endured trough 3 years of consitional carrying around and running minecraft @lowest settings with 15-20 fps (i got used to it) before i got my desktop.

Now its mostly used for Word,PowerPoint,Visio, notepad++ and SciTe at school.

Suprisingly it still works, but the battery only lasts for about an hour so its useless without a wall wart nearby..

Yes agreed,

but the metro interface should have (from launch) looked like a semi-transparent overlay to the desktop, with a more intuitive way of switching between the two which would have reassured first time users. Also it wouldn't have been so jarring when you select a program from metro and it goes back into desktop mode.

I disagree. Having a transparent overlay would have looked horrid and probably have been more disruptive to the user.

I view the start screen more as a sort of launcher... I switch to it to view my applications, click on an app then it launches and switches to it. I'm fine with that, and the transition between the desktop and start screen modes is very fluid and fast. :)

I don't like the idea of Metro apps, really don't see the point of them on the PC platform and they look limited to me. Also when I first heard about it I immediately disliked the philosophy of it; Microsoft trying to control

 content.

Agreed it's fast, but the user is still aware of the constant mode-switching unlike previous versions of Windows. I know it's not a big deal just a small niggle. Overall Windows 8 performance is good and nobody really complains about slowness like in the Vista days.

I too personally think Metro works well as a program launcher. You can configure it to be  a superior experience to the start menu. And if I switch to windows 8 I will not install a 3rd party start menu.

By 'PC platform' I think you mean desktop computers.

In that case, then just don't use them.

If you meant all devices, then no. Get a convirtable system... which failed myserably.. but I mean really mysrably with XP, Vista and 7. With WIndows 8, they are finally picking up. I was looking at them, and they were impossible ot use properly. Now I have a Surface Pro 2, and now it's functional. I don't know anyone that didn't rush and get Win8 on their Vista (well initially, they are now on Win7) or Win7 powered convertible systems.

Agreed. Beside news apps, and XBox Music, I don't use the metro apps on my desktop. The reson why I use news apps (News Bento), is because it brings the news sites I check, which don't have an RSS, and alows me to see it all in 1 location, ad free. So it's great in that reguard.

I do have other windows 8 apps, but that is just me fooling arround, and trying them for a while.

One thing that is awesome in Windows 8, is when you have multiple devices, it all syncs together... including, if you want, Windows settings, wireless passwords and OS layout (customizable).

There is a bug in Windows 8.1, which I encountered a few times, where the desktop icons remains visible on the Start Screen.

It happens randomly... I think it happens more often if you set the background to pitch black, and play with sleep/wake up, desktop/start...

But it happended with a background as well, including Win8.1 default background.

When the desktop icons are there by the bug (they are dimm like the background if you wonder), I can tell you, if you have a few icons on the desktop, this layout is a mess, and very confusing, like really, it's bad. Great idea on paper, but in application, seeing that bug... its really bad.

And that's without the windows and prograns open... I can only imagine being much worse with those on a multitask heavy setup.

Maybe the Start Screen needs a different animation.. like maybe sliding form the left or something when the win key or Star Button is pressed. Sometimes it's the little things that makes a big difference.
