Now that ThunderBolt 3 will be part of th USB4/USB3 gen2x2x4 2.1 revision 2 episode 2, how much do you think this will impact your future builds?

As for myself, I'm planning on replicating the "Fastest Xbox" build from a few weeks ago, but rather than take an angle grinder to the GPU, I'll use an eGPU setup that mirrors the "Cleanest Setup" from a few weeks ago.

 

I won't have to worry about a GPU filling the chassis with too much heat, and maintenance will be so much easier.

 

For future builds with my personal machine, I might downsize again to have a mini-itx with an eGPU and (paradoxically) better cooling.

Not at all.  It may change what I look for in laptops if it supports eGPUs and is platform agnostic.

 

Also, my cable nest is already complicated enough.  I do not relish the thought of having to add two more cables to it.

I still wouldn't. There is still too many drawbacks for it to be viable if you have the choice of the real deal or not

Also, my cable nest is already complicated enough.  I do not relish the thought of having to add two more cables to it.

i still own no thunderbolt devices, and the only type c device i own is my phone. So in 15 yrs maybe this will impact something, but for now this isn't implemented to the point that it will impact me. Remember that usb 4 isn't even started being implemented yet, AFAIK, the standard isn't even ready yet.

Insanity is not the absence of sanity, but the willingness to ignore it for a purpose. Chaos is the result of this choice. I relish in both.

Its only available to specific USB-IF members.  AMD is not in that group.

Absolutely 0.

  • I don't even have a USB 3.x Gen 2 capable device and see no need for one in even the medium term future.
  • An eGPU would be useless to me other than a novelty. If I'm going to have it hooked up to a desktop computer, I may as well build a complete desktop computer. And my laptop is more or less for my "away from home" computer. It almost never gets used at home.

This really.  For me to use a laptop with an eGPU I would need to have multiple power adapters and an easy to use hidden dock built into my desk at the house.  The eGPU would have to be a full dock with charging and data being on the same cable.

 

That would take much more time/money than just having a desktop for gaming.

I was planning on a new setup revolving around a MBP 13", TB3 External Storage (for Bootcamp and game library), and an EGPU.

 

I may put it off for a year or so now... I'd hate to buy into an ecosystem months before it's destruction. Any word on the port of USB 4? Is it USB-C with faster data rates (like USB 1.0-USB 3.0) or a totally different thing?
