HP EX920 1TB NVME M.2

Just wondering if any of you have personal experience with the HP EX920, I didn't even know HP made M.2/SSDs but overall consumer reviews seem good, AnandTech had a good thorough review as well. It is one of the most competitively priced drives in terms of $/GB and the 1GB cache is really attractive. The next best-priced 1TB NVME drive with cache is the Samsung 970evo costing a full $130cad more, so that's a no go for me. I'd go for a 1TB drive without cache before getting the 970evo.

I am looking to replace the drive in my Dell XPS 13 as I am severely running out of storage. My laptop is almost unusable for work unless I connect my 2TB external hard drive. So I don't know that I would even consider a lower capacity that 1TB.

Max Sequential Read Up to 3,200 MBps
Max Sequential Write Up to 1,800 MBps
4KB Random Read Up to 350,000 IOPS
4KB Random Write Up to 250,000 IOPS
Read Latency 0.020 ms
Write Latency 0.022 ms
MTBF 2,000,000 hours

i dont have personal experience, but if anandtech's benchmarks show it on par with 970 evo, then go for it. I trust anandtech *fully*. expesially if its cad$130 cheaper. keep in mind that hp software is not as good, their warranty *may* not be as good.

Yeah, I have good faith in AnandTech as well. Also, apparently HP moved up the 3-year warranty to 5 years so that makes me feel more confident.

this ssd is more power hungry if you care.

check if the wd black is cheaper where you are. (i would go for the wd black over the hp if its same price or slightly more expensive)

So a second tier NVMe SSD priced between first tier ones and the SATA ones. Decent deal if you ask me.

About that hahaha, I don't know if that was an error when typed out but the conclusion claims that it is more power hungry, however when I look at the 'Power Management' section it seems to be one of the best? Furthermore, on that page, it doesn't mention the power draw issues? Maybe I am missing something but I think when typing up the conclusion they may have looked at the wrong drive because it seems to be one of the best drives with regards to power consumption. 

 

Any extra set of eyes would be greatly appreciated!

that is *IDLE* power draw which they mentioned was the best. active idle was a little worse, but active use is, as mentioned, not very good (idk why they dont have a graph for that)

But active idle is still better than the 960evo or WD Black, and yeah WTF why is their no active use graph haha. Makes more sense now though, thank you!

most of the time your ssd is in idle mode / active idle so active power doesnt matter too much. I would still go for wd black because wd is more known/reliable for storage drives.

I have one, it's no joke. It's a great NVME M.2 and it goes on sale frequently.  They also have a new 950 iteration of it, so the 920's should be getting even cheaper.

 

These are my results using a PCI-E Adapter.  It was actually slower in some tests using my motherboard M.2 slot, but still good results. It's an older motherboard, so YMMV.

Good stuff, I am glad to hear! Yeah, I have a price watch set on PcPartPicker, once it drops like another $20 (which it has historically) I will buy one. Thanks for your input!

Just got the 1TB EX920 on sale for $200cad
