1660ti vs. 980

Hello boys!

 

I am thinking about GPU upgrade do you think it's worth it? Currently I have EVGA GTX 980 combined with i7-4790S I was looking at GTX1660ti and I think it's one of the best graphics cards in performace/value.

I think the 1660ti has better temperatures and lower power consuption but that performace differential isn't not that big. (Yeah i know about 6GB of GDDR6)

Mostly I am playing overwatch and I am getting about 78-80°C on GPU.

So my question is. Is there any signifficant perfomance upgrade or only in temperature and power consuption?

A 980 performs like a 1060 6GB and there is currently no reference for an equal in the new NVidia line up. But a 1660Ti performs like a 1070 which performs like the 980 Ti (with respects to gaming performance) so while not a huge performance gain it still should be noticeable.

1660ti will only be around 12-15% faster depending on models/overclocks than your 980. If you are selling the 980 and it won't cost much more to get the 1660ti, sure, go for it. If it were me, I couldn't justify spending $280+ for ~15% more FPS.

 

Looking online in 3D mark firestrike the 1660ti is around 16500 for score while the 980 is 15000

you solve temperature problem by replacing thermal paste and using a more aggressive fan profile, not getting a new card. This isn't the way LTT members will recommend anyway

you might want to compare 980 msrp with current gen similar cards, ie rtx2070. that shall be a big leap

The 1660 will be significantly better than a 980.

980 is pretty close to a 1060, but the 1060 can overclock more.

I don't think I have overheating problem I discuss this temperatures with other Maxwell GPU's owners and it's nothing special.

Also i did change thermal paste two months ago (i'm using MX4). ?

Yeah but pricing of RTX cards is crazy for me also I think I have to upgrade whole system. I think there will be some bottleneck in that combo i7-4970S and RTX2070.
