How to limit data usage per device on router?

Cuboid88

Hello, I'm currently using a Huawei b310 given by my provider for internet, however, I have a few other people on the same connection and I want to limit the amount that each of them can use. I'm open to using external software but no other hardware.

-Thanks very much!

How do you want to limit them? Just cut them off after so much usage? Limit their max speed?

no just cut them off after they've used all of the data

That depends, does your router even have such a feature?

Different brands do it differently. I know with Netgear you can prioritize certain devices to have more bandwidth shared to them.

Yea most consumer routers won't do this for you. Something like pfsense or other advanced routers can do this.

I'm not remembering it off the top of my head, but isn't there a program that Tech Youtubers have advertised that can do this (I think Linus has done an ad for it, but I can't remember)?

Replace your router with something capable of running Tomato WRT, DD-WRT, or anotehr WRT variant. If your Huawei device is the modem & router together, you'll want to bridge mode it, then add your own router that can run the aforementioned firmware. Alternatively, simply contact your ISP or Huawei and demand they implement real features in their hardware, or give you a replacement device that supports such features, otherwise you're switching providers. Then try to switch providers and realize that none of them offer hardware with such features, so it's back to getting your own router anyway.... :( I hate consumer electronics.
