Copying Steam games to me second computer

SarcasticElder

I am building a second computer for my brother (lives in same house) and I am trying to find out if it is possible to copy all our steam games from our current set up to the HDD on the new one without using internet. We have a very strict data cap and it would take several months worth to download our entire library.

You just copy the steam library folder, and then you are good.

I only see your reply if you @ me.

Assuming your Steam library is in the default path, copy the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps to the other computer's C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps.

However you do it is up to you.

I use 2 computers and the no issue way is to install them. The only way to get around this is to clone your drive.

Steam will not let 2 computers use the same account unless one of the computers is offline. So being nice to your brother my become a big pain to you.

You just need to copy the contents of whatever directory you have all the games installed in or the steamapps directory if you've been using the default folder for steam game installs which can be done either with the use of an external hard drive or done over the local network (make sure it's a gigabit connection as a large amount of data is going to take ages if the connection is 100Mbps) although you most likely will have to trigger the installation process on the new computer but all that will happen is that it will verify that all the files are present and only download what is not there.

Not entirely true.

You can play one but not play the same game. At least from the same IP.

Tried it once.

And Steam allows you to log in from multiple accounts. Do that all the time...

I have 1 account and 2 computers. When I have a game on pause on one computer Steam will ask me if I want to log off if I try to start a game on my other computer.

Maybe different rules for the EU.

That sounds like a convenience feature, though the logging off part sounds odd.

I can log in on my account with two computers at the same time. The only thing that happens is the library of both computers combine because of that in-home streaming thing.

You are right.

It is only when I try to launch the same game that I get the error message.

I can run it but then I get logged out of the other instance.

Still, I can run the game.

Just the same game is not possible...

And I haven't tried for example 2 UPlay games.
