Misconceptions About "Neutral" Sound

One of the things that I often see people say when asking for a headphone recommendation is, "I want a neutral sound signature to hear the music the way the artist intended." However, this is very flawed logic. I also find a big misunderstanding among many people of what the term "neutral" means.

 

First let's start with a definition of what a neutral sound signature is. By basic definition, a neutral sound signature would be one where there is no emphasis on any part of the music. If you looked at a frequency response graph it would be just one flat line. The first thing you must understand is it is impossible to have a perfectly flat response without EQ. This goes for headphones are speakers. This is because so many factors. On headphones it is extremely difficult to tune something to be perfectly flat. Due to how driver tuning and dampening works, often when you tweak something, it changes something else, meaning it is basically impossible to have a dead flat headphone. Also other factors can change the sound such as the pads wearing down over time, this will affect the sound. Also someone with larger ears that take up more volume of the cup, that also can slightly mess with the sound. Basically everything you do to a headphone makes a huge difference when it comes to sound.

 

Speakers on the other hand are a totally different story. What a lot of people don't realize is that the same set of speakers can sound totally different depending on the room. Other factors such as how far away you sit from them, the height, and the angle that a speaker is placed at, can all massively change how a speaker sounds. Professionals, and people who really care, will often do what is called "Room EQ". Basically what this entails is setting up a measurement microphone in the place that you will be sitting, and then the speakers play a tone across the audible frequency range. The microphone then picks up how the room is effecting the sound, and then creates an EQ to counteract how the room effects the sound. Now this is not to say that all studios EQ their speakers flat, we can have the argument of Harman vs Diffuse Field targets, but that is a complicated issue that we won't go into for the sake of those of you that are not too keen on audio.

 

Now if you for some reason want to EQ your headphones perfectly flat, Sonarworks does make a program called "Reference 4" that costs around $100 for headphones, and more for speakers and other devices. What Sonar Works does is measure many different pairs of headphones, and then analyzes the frequency response, then makes a counter frequency response that makes them dead flat. Also they have EQs for other desired sounds like bright, dark, bass boost, etc... And even still that will not be 100% perfect as there can be slight variances in response even between headphones of the same model. Luckily for those of you who are super anal about that, Sonarworks does allow you to send in your exact pair of headphones to be measured and have a personalized profile made. Now personally I don't believe in EQ as it can have problems on many headphones, particularly distortion depending on the amount of EQ, but that is a topic for another day. 

 

So now onto why you probably don't want a neutral response. First off, the argument that "It is the way the artist intended for it to be listened to." is totally incorrect. That is only assuming that they did in fact EQ their speakers and headphones dead flat, which you have no way of knowing. And even if they did and you did as well, the only way to listen to the song "the way the artist intended" is for you to use the exact same speakers or headphones, configured in the exact same way as the person who mixed and mastered the track. And as I mentioned in my thread about the misconceptions about studio headphones, mixing and mastering is done almost entirely on speakers, and a lot of artists try the tracks on things like phone speakers to get an idea of what it sounds like to people who don't have the $10,000+ Genelec surround setup that the track was probably mixed on. Also I mentioned in my studio headphones thread that you don't need a flat response to mix, you just need to know the response of your headphones or speakers to know how to counteract the peaks in their response, in your mix. So the artist didn't intend for you to have to listen to the track on a perfectly flat response. They make the track to be listened universally on things like your phone, or crappy Beats headphones and Airpods. 

 

The other reason you might not want a neutral response is that it can be boring. Now people ask me what is a really neutral pair of headphones, which honestly I struggle to think of anything that I would feel safe to call truly neutral. The Sennheiser HD800 is probably the closest thing that comes to mind, but even that is still V shaped to an extent.

There really is nothing in a headphone that is truly neutral without using EQ. Now onto why neutral can be boring, There are a few headphones that are not neutral but are not insanely far off general neutrality (because nothing is even close to dead flat neutral), and some of those headphones are boring to listen to. This is because a lot of people actually want some life in their music. If you listen to EDM, you want that elevated bass. People that listen a lot to anime or "Weeb" music tend to look for elevated mids. If you like classical or jazz, you probably want some emphasis on the treble where strings and many wind instruments fall. Having a very neutral response I think most people will think their music is dull and boring sounding. Now admittedly, a lot of the time this also has to do with dynamics, which to put it very simply is how well a headphone distinguishes between loud and quieter sounds. Headphones with poor dynamics often sound very dull and boring. Now going back to the HD800 being sort of neutral, I do own a pair of HD800, but I don't find myself using them much. This isn't so much because they are neutral, but more to do with the 6K peak and being very unforgiving with their detail retrieval. But that also is for when I ever get around to reviewing those.

Very good read. I think people should just use what they like. It starts to become an endless game with higher and higher end headphones that sound "much" better than the tier below them.

Yeah definitely not. M50X is pretty bad. He also reviewed the Sennheiser HD820S recently and gave them a great review. They also are awful. Probably because he doesn't know a $2400 pair of headphones can sound worse than a $50 one.

Interesting post. Do you have any insight on IEM flatness? Is there a set of range of EQ you can go before distortion or is that headphone specific?

IEMs are a bit strange as they often have a different target curve than headphones do. As for how much you can EQ, that depends on the headphone.

In the end, audio is a clearly subjective topic when it comes down to sound signature

 

After all some people for example have much lower / higher frequency limit on their hearing which already can affect how their brain intepret a headphone

I'll agree on m50s is shit headphones

 

Everything is subjective when coming to sound

Everyone has sound preferences/sensitivity/etc

While they can be technically can be measured but always boils down to the user(not to mention marketed bias)

I have eyewitnessed many gamers, musicians, and audiophiles preferring headphones in my collection that i was dumb founded on kinda blindly tested but nothing completely

I could go into details of this

But once i tell them brand their decision changes after going through them again

User music tastes plays huge role on what they think is neutral and what not 

 

Gaming wise i know you dislike virtual surround but hesuvi is nice for those games that don't have hrtf/biaural/headphone settings

And now i can have them test all those algorithms and go with whatever they like

And some have said that noticed a difference even having it on with speakers

 

I do have a question though why is it ok for in ear headphones and speakers  to have multiple drivers but not over ear headphones?

I know many are shit just like anything else but logically speaking

Absolutely, but the point of this thread was more to debunk the theory that neutral is the signature that lets them hear how the artist intended it to sound.

That is a bit of complicated answer. It is not that it is not ok for a headphone to have multiple drivers, it is just that I have yet to see anyone do one well. First of all these multi driver headphones that try to simulate surround, that is never ok because that is not how that works. But as for headphones and multiple drivers otherwise, I think there is potential, but there are problems. I had the 1More Triple Driver Over Ear headphones (which are actually double driver but that is another story) but they had a regular dynamic driver and a ceramic pizo tweeter. That tweeter gave insanely sharp and crisp highs and it was really nice, but the dynamic driver was total crap and ruined it since that does 95% of the work of the headphones.. I would like to see someone else try one with a pizo tweeter, but use an actual good driver. However, I could still easily tell when the tweeter was playing as it was in a different location than the DD. When you have multiple drivers in a headphone, there is an open space that is not large enough for the sounds to blend together typically for you not to notice that. However, a lot of that will also have to do with your crossover points. As for why it is ok with speakers, it is because the speakers are not in a tightly enclosed space and sounds start to spread out as soon as they leave the drivers. This allows them to blend together by the time they reach your ears. If you put your ear right on a speaker you can tell when the woofer and tweeter is playing in a lot of cases. As for IEMs, they can have multiple drivers because all the sound is funneled through a little tube right into your ear canal. This doesn't give the drivers space to spread out and each by noticeable, also no resonance.

I would also like to point out that approaching "flatness" from simply an electrical/acoustic standpoint is not always helpful.  That is because human hearing itself is biased.  Humans interpret certain frequencies as louder than others even if they are the same amplitude electrically/acoustically.  This is an evolutionary adaptation, we tend to hear frequencies that are in the range of human speech (or crying babies) much louder than other frequencies.  You have to take that into account as well as the response of the inner ear to really approach something flat.

A good example of IEMs that approach this well is anything from Etymotic Research.  Their IEMs are designed by an audiologist who holds many patents for hearing aids.  The response curve doesn't look completely flat for the Etymotic ER4s because the design takes into account human hearing bias.  ER4s are well reviewed IEMS (I have a pair), but again, flat sound isn't for everyone.  It can sometimes sound amazing and it can sometimes sound boring depending on the content.  Etymotic even released a pair called "XR" with added bass because most people find flat bass response as underwhelming.

While I appreciate the flatness of the ER4s, I also own a pair of Audio Engine A5+ speakers.  These are not tuned to be more flat, they are purposefully designed to be more punchy and provide a "colored sound" and I love them as well.  I appreciate the response of these two different approaches for different material and really that should be your approach to all sound equipment.  I think you want something that is not lacking in response or too overwhelming in any response and sounds good as is or requires the least amount of EQ to match your preferences.

It is also a phenomenon that when comparing audio side-by-side, you tend to notice contrasting responses immediately and over time your brain will kind of normalize the listening experience for you.  For example, when listening to my ER4s for a long period of time and switching to a different pair of headphones, the pair I put on will almost always sound like the bass is drowning out the clarity in my music due to the subdued bass in the ER4s.  However, if I listen to other headphones and then switch to the ER4s, they sound shrill and bassless.  The point is, switching A to B or B to A both sound negative immediately, even if both are good, our listening is biased to pick up on differences.  Cheap or underperforming headphones take advantage of this by using a V EQ shape, that is boosting the bass and treble.  In a side-by-side test, a V EQ will immediately sound like it has more fidelity because your ear notices the difference immediately.  You might be fooled into thinking it's the better speaker set, but a longer listen and you'll notice that certain aspects of the sound are lacking without a proper mid response.

Avoiding tricks that give you the impression of fidelity is what you should pursue in terms of a headphone or speaker response.  Neutral is more meaningful when interpreted this way than it is to be interpreted as flat.  Flat is hard to achieve and even when you get close (like with Etymotic) it's definitely not for everyone.

Yes absolutely, you certainly gave a much more technical approach than I did. I wanted this to be a bit more understandable to most people. If you see I mentioned Harman and Diffuse Field responses which are both approaches to counteract the biases of the human ear. However there still are circumstances where people do EQ flat.

Ah, thanks, didn't know the exact names for those phenomenon.  Yeah, it's a complicated subject, as an electrical engineer I deal with circuit and transducer responses all the time (though not usually audio) so the entire field fascinates me.   I mean we haven't even talked about the response of the microphone or any of the recording equipment either, those also color the sound!  You could write an entire textbook or several on the topic!

I didn't say it wasn't ok, just hard to do. And no doesn't sound at all like virtual surround, don't know where you got to that conclusion.

As for IEMs, they can have multiple drivers because all the sound is funneled through a little tube right into your ear canal. This doesn't give the drivers space to spread out and each by noticeable, also no resonance.

Then explain multi driver speakers?

I have heard 933 amd they are for gaming and  that's what  they do

Used to work at a danish company called B&O, now they had a subjective focus on sound, they had the rooms and the setup mechanically to create a flat sound signature, but they knew that customers wanted different, they always went for the "live performance" sound signature, as they called it.. soundstage and the feeling of being present.

 

yes sound is subjective, but for me there are headphones, that mimic flat response curves, so they actually play the sound as recorded, and a bit more fun and engaging headphones..

 

i cannot try everything, so i do use "people" to give me some sort of direction on what to buy.

 

F.ex. Zeos is not "sound guy" he has a personal perpective on it, but i really like him for the focus of comfort, which he often nails, and the funness of his reviews..

Inner fidelity is more the mechanical aspect.

 

I normally find a guy, try some of the headphones he likes, and then sees if it linkes up to what i actually like.

What's Harman field? Not come across that one and haven't come up with anything meaningful in a quick search. I also don't really get much involved with psychoacoustics, but have heard before that flat diffuse field target may be favoured over free field. It wasn't mentioned why. Does it make assumptions about environment reverb?

 

When I bought a bunch of headphones some years ago I did measure them with what I have at work. I have to stress, the equipment is intended for telephony applications, so it is starting to get questionable above 8kHz or so. I use a head and torso simulator, with realistic pinna (ear). Measurement was at the ear drum, but for the chart below I transferred it to what would be free field (effective response if something was directly in front of you). The two AKG headphones I own. The Sennheiser belongs to work. 

 

I don't know if I can quantify if I will like the sound from frequency response alone. I do know, I don't like elevated bass. The closed K550 is just about tolerable for my tastes, which I got to help reduce leakage at work. I much prefer the open sound of either the K702 or HD600.

How about Tyll from Innerfidelity? He put them on his Wall of Fame, you know, and gave them a good review. It's one thing when MKBHD is reviewing something he has no idea about and entirely other when a guy who has been reviewing headphones longer than MKBHD is alive does it.

Tyll is a bit of a mixed bag. I have great respect for Tyll as he is someone who pioneered the idea of having many headphones as a hobby, however later in his career even he admitted that his hearing was starting to go, which lead to his retirement a few months ago. Tyll, especially in his later years, had a very odd preference of sound and missed a lot of flaws with many headphones. I do still respect his work, his measurements, and everything he has done for the audiophile community. 

 

As for the subject of a good youtube reviewer of website. I can't say I have come across one that I wholly believe in. There are certain people in the community who's opinions I trust, but not one I trust entirely. Metal571 would probably be the one I agree with most if you want a youtube reviewer. I typically agree with him on the technical aspects of headphones, but he has a vastly different taste when it comes to signature and is a major fan of EQing to meet the Harman response curve since his music preferences tend to be in a lot of mainstream stuff that isn't super well recorded.
