If you were using the motherboard with a first gen ryzen CPU, like an r3 1200 or r5 1600, then its already had it's BIOS updated.'

If you've never used the motherboard before, it'll need the BIOS update.

Assuming it didn't ship with a compatible BIOS.

AMD will send you a CPU that you can use to update the BIOS for free, you'll just have to send it back to them when you're done.

@mxk.

Im not sure if they are still doing this, but if they are they will send you a cheap APU and HS, and allow you to update bios, then you ship the APU back.

@mxk.

You have to put a chip that's first gen in the motherboard, like an ryzen 3 1200. I think picking up a good B450 motherboard is a better choice. You'll spend the same amount of money on a first gen chip that you would spend on a better, new B450 motherboard.

I didn't know that AMD ships you a loaner.

hmm.. ok, what about just getting a 1600 instead? how would that impact the performance?

@mxk.

@Crunchy Dragon

The performance gap between the 1600 and 2600 isn't terribly big, and you likely wouldn't notice a difference anyway.

I personally have a 1600 and I love it.
