Do I need to upgrade my CPU?

Hello guys, I am planning to upgrade my PC. Right now I am equipped with I5 6500, 16GB RAM 3000MHZ, GTX 1060 and couple SDD's. My goal is to be able to edit online 4K video from Sony A7III. I am thinking of getting a Ryzen 2600 CPU. Would it be a good upgrade? Or I should save my money and buy something even more powerful later on? I have spare B350 motherboard so please keep in mind that I need to buy CPU only.

You'll always be able to wait for better tech, getting a Ryzen CPU now is probably a good idea for video editing.

It would help, but it might be worth waiting for Ryzen 3000 in a few months depending on how that performs relative to second gen. Right now the upgrade would be a notable, though relatively small increase in performance.

Did your motherboard have the BIOS updated to accept the new CPU, or was it released before that?

He's looking at switching from intel to AMD. A BIOS update on an intel board won't make it compatible with AMD chips, he'll need a new motherboard.

B350 is an AMD chipset....hence why he said he'd only need to buy the CPU ;)

Turns out it helps if you re-read a topic after not looking at it for 20 ish hours. ?

And yes you are correct. Depending on BIOS revision he'll need an update before installing any Ryzen 2xxx series cpus.
