Replacing 6 year old gaming build ~ $2500 to spend

Solarhawke

Building my first computer in close to 6 years and a LOT has changed.  You don't even want to know what I'm using right now though I will say my current graphics card is an Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 Ti, yah we ballin'.  My concerns are compatibility, things like the m.2 NVME drive (SATA/PCIe, bandwidth what??), RBG ( can I even figure out how to connect all of it?!?), and ensuring the system I build is good for at least 3-4 years before I need/want to start replacing components.  My current motherboard is failing and has almost caused a catastrophic failure of my storage drive (drive has been pulled out and appears to be working for now).  Because of that I probably need to do this sooner rather than later.  My only other concern is the video card I picked for the system. Feels like I'm paying a lot for an old-ish card?  Are better options that would fit the budget?

Here's the parts list: Revision 5?

1. Budget & Location

My budget is around $2500 US but it's flexible since I want to upgrade my monitor and will need to upgrade from Windows 7 (which I've enjoyed for far too long apparently).

2. Aim

I don't game competitively or anything so I'm looking for something to run WoW, Skyrim, maybe Fornite, and probably Pantheon once it launches.  Preferably at top end settings with one 1440 monitor.  4K would be a waste for me to be honest but I'm not opposed to it.  Other than that the system will serve for general internet browsing, music via spotify, might stream movies from my hard drive to my TV, and some school work (MBA type stuff).

3. Monitors

Just the one aforementioned monitor listed on the parts list.

4. Peripherals

I don't need any peripherals other than the monitor and the speakers, both I've added to the parts list.  I will need to upgrade to windows 10.

5. Why are you upgrading?

My current system is 6 years old and the motherboard is failing (at least I think that's the issue).  Plus I want some of that RGBling in my life.

I appreciate any time and thoughts ya'll have.

  • You're using a generation old CPU, the 9700k is out now.
  • The 970 Pro is likely overkill, just get an Evo, or perhaps even a different NVME drive.
  • The RTX 2060 is better value, though perhaps look at the 2070 for higher frame rates.

Thanks!

Yeah, I considered moving up to the 9700k but didn't feel the upgrade was worth it for my intended use.

The 970 pro is most certainly overkill.  I got caught up in all the NVME amazing load times madness.  I could probably save a fair bit with a mostly comparable drive.

I do love my frame rates.  I wonder if I can fit either of those into my budget.

My other concern is compatibility with the RGB.  I think I've chosen everything so that it will work in sync.  Also, so I have enough cooling with the stock case fans or should I add more?

Yeah the difference with the 970 pro and evo is very small wich is why i would never consider spending an extra $100 for 200mb faster write speeds.

RGB in sync definately looks better i got the h500i so i could manage all my rgb stuff on the nzxt cam software.

With your cpu being watercooled you shouldnt have to worry about case air intake although it does depend on if you will have the aio fans pulling in air or exhausting

my case has 2 fans 1 for exhaust and win for intake plus my aio also intakes air and my cpu is at 5ghz and at max it hits 75C when its running games for Hours.

The 2070 is definately a good deal for $495 but yeah i see the point about the 9700k its a little better for games but you do lose out on threads for other tasks so it just comes down to wich ever one yo can get for a better deal.

the z370-e is pretty overpriced IIRC, a gigbyte Z390 aorus would be a better choice.

Would the Z390 Aorus pro sync with the rest of the rbg items?  I would like to make that as easy as possible.  Their software is called RGB Fusion?  So I would just have to go back and make sure the RGB items I did pick were compatible with that system I'm guessing.

Ok, I've made several changes based on the recommendations from above.  My concern about syncing up the RGB is yuuuge.  I don't want rainbow puke inside my case.  I want it all to work together to create a subtle effect.

I switched video cards because I read some rather unflattering reviews of the gigabyte cards.  The current selection also has RGB so I'm wondering if I should mount it vertically or if it's too much of a pita.

Other than that I think everything is solid with this list.  Still a bit higher than I wanted to go but I don't want to sacrifice much more to shave off a few bucks.  Thoughts?

Considering holding off for the RTX 2060.   Should I, or should I just pull the trigger now?

  • 3 weeks later...

This is an older thread that I started so I wasn't sure if I should bump this one or start a new thread but I figured I would bump this one for reference.  I've stepped back my build a bit.  I really won't be jumping into 4k gaming or anything wild so I really don't need the almost top end stuff I had originally picked out.  WoW and Skyrim, that's my jam.  I do want to run those at high to ultra settings though.  So with that said, is this build sufficient?

Also, is the monitor overkill or can I benefit from this particular monitor given my stepped back approach.  I'm not entirely set on the rtx 2060 and would be willing to upgrade if absolutely necessary.

Not reflected in the list is an OS.  I'll need a version of Win10.

Thanks again for all your input folks.
