What’s the difference between a psu with a 80 plus rating versus one without

Its how efficient a PSU is. The better the rating, the more efficiently power is used by the PSU.

That one with an 80+ has been certified by a company to be at least 80% efficient at ≥20% load. Depending on the rating, the requirement may be higher.

Different efficiency. PSU without 80+ rating is very inefficient, around 60-70%. PSUs with 80+ rating are over 80% efficient depending on efficiency "metal" like Bronze/Silver/Gold etc.

Main system: Ryzen 7 7800X3D / Asus ROG Strix B650E / G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO 32GB 6000Mhz / Powercolor RX 7900 XTX Red Devil/ EVGA 750W GQ / NZXT H5 Flow

Don't worry about it, unless you are living off grid.

Or if your electricity is 50c/kwh.

In Taiwan the island they store nuclear waste on gets free electricity as comphensation lol. Every islander mines bitcoin since the electric is all free

Keep in mind rating/efficiency has almost zero correlation with quality in a PSU. Also, manufacturers have been known to fake ratings.

80+ certification is one of several indicators of quality.

So yeah, if your CPU is not at least 80+ rated you should be very concerned, because literally every decent quality PSU is at least 80+ bronze.

You will never find a company like corsair selling non-80+ PSUs.

Obviously you still have to read reviews and do some research but if it's not 80+ that's the first red flag.

Silverstone used to make pretty good 80+ White PSUs lol

Well, thanks to modern technological progress and better quality components and circuit design there is really no reason for a PSU to be below 80+ these days :)

Same with Antec, the TruePower Quatro was very nice for it's time (and is still alright), BUT no modern 80plus unit; any that are still being made are good, because their aim is for people with little to no budget.
