oil heater vs folding

i don't have central heating, and one of the bad thing about living in a flat is it gets really cold, especially when it's windy. 

 

i have a oil heater, unknown brand, unknown wattage. i guess it's about 2kw. it's not doing so well, on full power it only makes my bedroom mere 3 degrees warmer. 

 

by contrast, my main rig(4790k, 1070) only able to put up under 500w of heat, even on full whack. however when it's folding, it can heat up the room about the same as the heater. why is that? 

 

part of it is the fans, i think. my rig has 5 fans, 6 if you include the psu, 3 generic black frame fans for exhaust, 2 gentle typhoons for intake while cooling the 240 rad. even my machine is nowhere near the power my heater, by actively blowing warm air, even if it's 1 or 2 degree warmer, it heats the room more evenly. 

 

oil heater however, because i have to place it against the wall, quite a lot of heat is wasted on warming the wall, i think. 

 

i don't know if it can be improved by adding a fan next to it, blowing hot air away. turning it into an air conditioner.

You need to seal your windows and doors, go to Home Depot and buy them.

 

Next up for your oil heater, you should place under a window and put tin foil on the ground and on the wall so that it reflects heat into the room, better yet use a fan to blow the heat towards you.

 

If its an old heater, and you put it full blast and you touch it and its not hot then its time to get it fixed or run off to Home Depot and buy a new heater. Oil heaters are good for safety.

Hence the name radiators they radiate heat so a fan would do you justice. Or just use your PC

i use a oil heater in my living room 18 x18 (only one central vent and in an off shoot so doesnt do crap to this room) i only have it set to 2 but i added a low speed case fan attached to a wall power adapter set it about 1 to 2 feet away blowing toward it...it keeps the room nice and toasty. hell i have to turn it off a lot of times cause it gets to hot.

The oil heater is likely closer to 1500 watts not 2000. Pretty much all 120v heaters are this, basically the limit. Even a 10$ heater will put out 1500w unless it' s a low power one meant for an office. On oil rads, 500w is low, 1000 is medium, and 1500 is high. 

You need to dedicate a circuit to it mostly. On a 15 amp circuit, it will take most of the available power. 

The thing about the oil based rads is they are meant to provide steady heat. Most heaters have a temp dial, and will shut off it you don't have it on the highest setting when it reaches a certain temp, maxing it will make it run at whatever the hig-med-low wattage setting is constantly. For regular heaters that are basically a coil and a fan, it's either be too hot or have it instantly be too cold when it kicks off. 

Oil rads take much longer to transfer their heat to the room after starting, but they maintain their heat after powering off for a while, meaning they're great to keep a steady room temperature. 

The way it works is the hotter air rises and the cooler air falls, making a convection current to circulate the heat, even in a room with no airflow. Still, a small far somewhere in the room can help this. 

As far as wasted heat into the walls, yes and no. 

It might be a good idea to bring it from the wall. They don't reach ignition temperature even for paper, so as long as you're careful with it an don't put it in a walkway and make sure you have an extension cord you can't trip over will be fine. 

The thing about cold walls is they absorb heat anyway. For long term- if you keep the room above a certain temp always, the objects in the room (furniture, etc) will eventually match the room temp. 

For walls, maybe the drywall and some insulation will reach the temp of the room. It really depends on the temp ont he other side of the wall and how good the insulation is. Think of a concrete floor in a garage or a basement. In the summer, it helps keep the room cooler, but in the winter it it's very aggressively cold and really affects the room temp if left bare. 

The same goes for your walls and floor in a  room where the adjacent rooms (interior walls in the US often have no insulation) are cold or they are exterior walls
What im saying is, regardless of where you place the heater, they will always absorb a significant amount of heat. You'll notice this in the summer too, since the temp difference with ac is lower, it's pretty easy to get all of your walls to reach the air conditioning temp, and having the house or room at a constant temp just feels nicer- nothing is radiating heat quickly making it even- you'll basically gain heat at the speed your insulation allows only when the internalk layers are cooled down

You need to introduce the most amount of heat into the room- as much as the circuits can support or you can afford- look at your electric bill to see what you pay a killowatt hour. 
Heat is heat. If your PC does 500w and the radiator does 500 watts, there no difference, it will make its way into the room. You'll feel the heat from the pc imemdiatly, but the raditor may take a half hour or more. It will also continue to radiate until it cools down after losing power as I mentioned before. It all makes it there, and once it's up to temp where it wont get any hotter it's going to be putting out a constant 500, 1000, or 1500w of heat so long as it's on constant, and the temp dial is all the way up. 

Radiators are very effective, and I prefer them for the steady heat even at lower thermostat settings

The first thing you need to look at is draft. Draft will make you lose heat in a way that would make how well your room is insulated or the walls absorbing heat insignificant. Check your windows if you have any. Use that shrink plastic stuff if it's an old window and you feel draft. That works wonders. A blanket works, but often lets the draft in at the bottom. With plastic and nailing the blanket on the outside with a  nice seal, it's extra insulation where old windows have a very poor r value. The shrink wrap doesn't just stop draft, the air barrier actually works as insulation- that's how dual pane windows work kinda. A blanket makes you lose any heat the suns gives during the day though in some cases. If you have a door and the other side is cold, make sure you either add weatherstripping to it or if its an interior door just the bottom part probably. Or cram a towel under it idk. 
Next you need to consider the size of your room, how well you think its insulated, and plug that into a BTU calc.

Not near perfect, but it will give you an idea. Convert BTU to watts and you'll see how much power you need to move the needle. 

Finally, adding more heat if you need it-

Find out what outlets are on what circuit. Go to your breaker and turn things off if you have to, and check the amperage of the lines- itll be written on the switches. Remember, watts = volts x amps. You'll want no more than one 1500w heater per line in most homes. Keep in mind the cost. One 1500w heater costs around 36$ a month at 8 hours of day full on with 10c a kwh rates. 

Finally, you could just bear the cold with clothes while you're awake and sleep with a heated blanket. That's the cheap option, cause a heated blanket would be like idk 100-150 watts.
Try to keep the room above 60 f though in the case of just bearing the cold

3kw/h for a room, once its up to temp it wouldnt need that much power would it, I mean it does say 10k BTU/hour but it all depends how good everything is sealed up. Yeah ok 3kw/h to heat one room, just seems like a lot. No wonder our home heating bills are so expensive in the winter. Makes one want to look at alternatives, no not solar, cheaper alternatives. I got an idea using wood.

Interior rooms are less typically, but yea I have natural gas and I'm very thankful for my about 30$ bill gas bill in the winter with the heat cranked

thanks for replying, my mains voltage is 220v, and that oil heater has the best plug in the world so i wager it was made in her majesty's britonville. it's a 10-column or fin model, based on my digging on ebay and aliexpress, it should be a 2000w one. 

 

im not live in the states and we don't have hardware stores like home depot, the closest thing we got is carrefour, yeah. getting another heater is not an option too due to limited budget. (im not paying the bill thankfully) 

 

seems the only thing i can do is get a fan, i hope some small electronics store in the market still sell them, otherwise no one in frigging right mind would wanna buy a fan in the winter right? and i have to figure out how to carry it on my bike too, i don't have a car.

Sounds strange that there is no good deals on fans or radiators with fans - called convectors.

 

But a cheap option is to get a 5/7/12V adapter and two 120-140 mm case-fans and mount them on the radiator. ZIP-ties is your friend ? ?

You may even have a spare charger from an old phone that you can use. The ghetto way is to strip the cables, twist them together and some electrical tape, the more serious way is to solder and heat-shrink those cables.

using wood is only gonna be a cheaper solution if you get it for free and dont have to put in much work.

 

the trend for new build houses in my area is installing a air heat pump and adding either gas or oil heating on top in case its too cold for it to function for a too long time.

a house. In the winter here it often gets to -10 to -15 F, though I think my bill's a bit higher in that case. 30$ right now for a month of 30 f and below heating to 72f constant. It's not huge, but I have multiple natural gas appliances and pretty ok insulation. I have a large detached garage that has a workshop attached I'm in the process of finishing it and adding a gas line out to it. My provider is very cheap, I don't remember hat I pay per therm, but I switch a couple of years ago and halfed my bill pretty much.

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

screwing around in the town, everyone look at me like im a fucking alien when i said i want a small fan. the best one i found is in a warehouse kinda place where they sell big stuff like stoves and aircons to businesses. it's a small floor fan, but they asking ~37 usd for that, what a rip off, nah. it looks a bit like this:

Holy shit 37 for a fan, I pay 10$ for a 1500w space heater and about 30$ for a decent radiator cone locally, a fan should be cheaper but out of season I guess. If your budget is really limited, go for the heated blanket option, and maybe just move the space heater away from the wall a couple of feet. Get some socks or slippers and a jacket to wear inside. 

A heated blanket, at least here int he us on amazon, will run you 30-40 usd but is very worth it for sleeping warm.

thanks, im not cold in the bed, in fact its quite warm and cozy actually. i just get cold hands and feet when im sitting in front of my computer. my feet sweats even it's cold so i dont like to wear socks at home, but besides that i do wear at least two layers from top to bottom, sometimes with gloves too. but if it gets damp, as winter here tends to, then no clothes is warm enough...

why everybody post the spec of their rig here? i dont! cuz its made of mashed potatoes!

feet are cold but sweat with socks tell me about it. Slippers too.

Convert to an electric water heater rather then gas, see how much it needs, then look at the stove, microwave and dryer. Add to all that the kilo-watt needed to heat an entire 2400sqft house. I bet in California they'd ban that! They sure banned solar quickly didnt they.

what do you mean with a wood powered generator?

like the conventional boil water and power a turbine kind of thing?

 

10KW would be a massive and loud turbine not to mention the huge amounts of wood you would need for this.

Talking WW1 technology, but a boiler is an interesting angle as well. Its a cursory way of getting cheap heat with the way gas and electricity prices are going. Biofuel into a Dodge V10.

idk I'd have to look at a bill and I'm not home. But my utility company allows me to pick different providers, and I switched last year and saved a hell of a lot. Night and day difference over electric, even with the higher rates I had before, it really fiscally wasn't worth it to keep the house colder to the point that it's not comfortable to save money, would only save me a few bucks.
