Greetings everyone I figure off topic is the perfect place for this post sorry in advance I'm sure someone has already been through this

So I guess my question here is obvious. Is it possible to make your home network harder to hack into? I know little to nothing about hacking / cyber security, I just know how easy it is for people who do know as I've seen them do it in front of me.

*Is there any way of stopping a ddos attack if your on the receiving end ? a program or software ??

*And with the modem / router is there any way to make it harder to hack ? I mean the people I've seen took about a whole minute if that??

act like a normal human being on the internet and don't go to dodgy sites?

even if you don't go there you might stumble upon hackers or weirdos

The most common method of denial of service is to attack a service exposed to the internet - so if you're not hosting anything then you're only prone to a flood attack which is very hard to do these days.

The problem is you are one person, at a single house, with a single internet connection. Once somebody has your public IP there's nothing you can do if somebody really has it out for you. Now again if you do not host any services there's nothing to take down, and if they flood attack you, your ISP more than likely has safeguards for that. If you do have services they either overwhelm it with requests or they exploit it and knock it down - either way it isn't going to last all day.

"hacking" is an entirely different story. DDoS/DoS/Flooding are not hacking.

The real answer to this question is: Yes. Turn off your modem, disconnect all cables, and set it on fire somewhere.

My advice for everyone who wants to secure their home.

  1. Change your WiFi default passwords and password to access the webUI of the router to something MUCH harder. A phrase or something that does not make sense but it's easy to remember
  2. If you're buying any IoT devices that can be controlled the via the your network or internet, I'd recommend setting up a completely separate network (This can be tricky to setup but with correct help, it can be done and might be overkill)
  3. This is related to number 2, If you're buying any device that can be access from outside, make sure that you have the option to change default name and password. If a device does not have the option, DO NOT BUY IT!!!
  4. UPDATE your devices and KEEP UPDATING THEM!
  5. Turn off any device that you're not constantly using
  6. if you're port forwarding, ONLY Open the ports you need and make sure that the device is secure. This goes with number 3,4.
