9th Gen Intel CPU w/ 8th Gen Mobo... Help!

Go to solution Solved by Fasauceome,

You need to have an 8th gen CPU to access the BIOS before an update. Got a PC shop nearby to lend one?

Hey All,

So I am trying to troubleshoot my new build (specs below...) and I was wondering, does anyone know how to Flash Bios on a MSI z370m Mortar (https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/Z370M-MORTAR/Overview)?

I have installed everything on the board on my trusty cardboard test bench, but when I attempt to power the bugger on I get nothing. No post, no beeper codes. Just pretty lights and a blank screen. I have reseated the CPU, reinstalled the cooler, tested the PSU, moved the ram around (only using a single stick). All the normal things I could think of.

Is there anything else I can try that y'all can think of? I downloaded the latest bios with compatibility to 9th gen CPUs on a thumb drive, but idk how to update bios if I cant reach it on this board.

I would prefer not to have to get an 8th gen CPU just to update bios, but it is what it is I guess haha. Really want to get this going cause my current rig is a 1st gen AMD quad core... You can probably tell why I am excited for a new build. Haha!

Thanks ahead of time!

Specs:

CPU: Intel Core i5-9600k

PSU: Thermaltake Smart RGB 700w 80+

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

Which 1st gen?

also, you need an 8th gen CPU to update the BIOS. take it to a local computer shop and they might do it there or buy a very cheap 8th gen CPU

Considering the ONLY difference between the i5 9600K and i5 8600K is that the 9th gen is soldered while the 8th gen isn't but most of the time 5ghz is doable without delidding the i5 8600K either ways you should have went with 8th gen all along and spared yourself the headache.

Won't it be cheaper to buy a new MB rather than buying a cheap 8th gen chip?

Bummer deal. Alrighty, sounds like I need to save up more money haha!

As for my old build (which I apparently get to use a while longer... rofl) it has a phenom x4 series. Cant remember the model. So I might be wrong saying it's a 1st gen quad core. But hey, 10 year old processor. Still works like a charm (when it's not blue screening). ;D

Edit: So basically I need something like the Celeron G4900 just to change the bios? *hesitantly reaches for wallet*

I'm going to give MSI a call later and see if there is a backdoor. I will update this post for other trouble cases if I learn anything. Thanks for the help everyone!

Aaaannnndddd confirmed. Just talked to MSI and they dont have the Bios rollback feature on it. So looks like I am buying myself a Celeron g4900 just to flash the bios.

AORUS Master

Not everyone needs a US$ 294,00 motherboard for an i5... in fact that'd make the motherboard cost more than the processor which makes no sense.

The Aorus Pro is more than 100 dollars cheaper and completely adequated for 5ghz i5 8600K / i5 9600K.
