FX 4300 Bottleneck RX 580 4GB?

Hey guys! My buddy has a computer with a GTX 660 and an FX 4300, and I feel shitty that he can't really play many games with the rest of our core group. Normally that's fine since we usually play CS together.

 

I know that the best option would be for him to get a new computer altogether, but that isn't an option, and with the juicy price of the 580 4GB, it's hard not to consider it.

 

Thats why I'm wanting to ask you guys how much of a bottleneck we'd see with the stock FX 4300 if it'd bottleneck it at all.

Yes, it'd bottleneck heavily, the FX4300 is by all means considered obsolete for current day standards.

would probably get LESS bottleneck with a faster FX CPU with the RX 580 but still wouldn't be optimal.

What's the Motherboard you're using?
If you have something decent like an ASUS Sabertooth or the last generation 970 Boards that were released like a Year or two ago for example, it might make sense to replace it with an FX8350 or 8370.

If you can find it cheap, FX9590 is also an option.

 

If you have a 50-70€ Board, don't bother and replace it. Even the Athlon 200GE should be a bit better. But with Prices how they are right now, it makes the most sense to get a Ryzen 5 x600 or Ryzen 7 for ~150-175€, a Board for like 75-100€ and a pair of good Memory - wich is around a hundred €uronen right now for 16GiB...

Yes, youd be better off sticking with the 660 and getting a better CPU Motherboard and ram

aside from the CPU bottleneck so severe that he could run 4K without much GPU bottleneck, the GTX 980 performs at the same level as the RX 580 so no point in getting that card at all.

Maybe try a 570. It's still better than the current graphics card and will bottleneck less. Also, the 570 is just about the best value graphics card out there right now, going for excellent prices on eBay, and you can have some leftover cash to get an FX 6300 or something and mitigate the bottleneck.

Ebay is a bad idea for various resons.

 

As for the 570:
I've seen a 4GiB Version of it for 119€ on sale a coule of days ago...

There would be severe bottlenecking. I would not recommend getting a 580 for a CPU that weak. Anything north of a 560 would significantly bottleneck.
