How to choose the right router?

fernandopicoral

Hi there!
I'm changing my internet provider and I would like to change my routers as well because they are quite old (2014) and I'm not sure if they will handle my new internet.
I had 15Mbps (not fiber) and now I'm changing to 100Mbps (fiber).
I'm trying to choose a good router but it's quite difficult because I don't have a lot of knowledge on this field.
In order to choose a good router, I would appreciate some help with these questions:
(If you don't know the answer for all of them, there is no problem, any help is welcome!)

  • What is the difference betwen LAN ports 10/100, 100/100 and 10/100/1000?
  • What should be the router speed in Mbps in order to handle my 100Mbps connection?
  • What is the best option in wireless IEEE standart? 802.11ac or 802.11n?
  • What frequency should I choose? 5ghz, 2.4Ghz or a router with both frequencies?
  • What does the antenna dBi mean?

I have to use two routers to get wifi in my house, one at the living room from wich I connect my second router, that it's at my bedroom and, from this router, I connect my computer. Do you think that this can harm my connection?

Is there any difference in connecting my computer on LAN port 1, 2 or 3 like priority or something?

Do you have any router to recommend me?

Sorry for this massive post but I really did not find any good information about that.
Thanks for the help guys!

Max speed bandwidth in Mbps.

At least 100Mbps, but get a 1Gbps router.

802.11ac is better.

5GHz supports higher speeds but can't pass through concrete, 2.4GHz supports lower speeds but can pass through thicker walls. Get a router that supports both frequencies.

1. This refers to the different bandwidths the ports can operate at 10Mbps, 100Mbps and 1000Mbps (1Gbps).

2. Technically, 100Mbps, but there's basically no difference between 100Mbps and 1000Mbps in terms of price, so no point in not going for 1000Mbps

3. 802.11ac.

4. Both. 5GHz provides more bandwidth and less interference, but the range is shorter and it's not as good at penetrating walls and such compared to 2.4Ghz.

5. It's a way of measuring antenna gain. It's essentially how powerful the antennas are. Some countries have restrictions on how powerful they can be without licensing.

To give some answers on your questions LAN ports 10/100 100/100? What is this? anyways and 10/100/1000 is the speed they handle. Like 10 would be 10Mb 100 will be 100Mb and 1000Mb.

Secondly the router speed should handle atleast 100Mb for a 100Mb connection, while most routers are 1000Mb now days you should be completely fine.

Third. i belive if i'm not completely wrong, 802.11ac is the best option. (Don't quote me on that :P )

Fourth. 5Ghz if the connecting device can handle it.

Last. I'm not a wireless fanboy so i got no idea :P

I live in Brazil but I can buy the router at the USA.

About the price, I would like to spend something around $150 or less, if possible.

Also look for something that has range. Ubiquiti has some good routers. But they aren't the only ones

Just want to point out that even if the router has a 1Gbit switch it does not automatically mean it has an Wan-Lan throughput that is 1Gbit.  My Linksys EA6500 can only do about 670Mbit throughput but the LAN has support for 1Gbit. Never heard of a modern router that can not handle 100Mbit throughput though.

A friend just bought an Linksys EA635. A very cheap dual band router that would honestly work for most people unless you have tons of clients. It replaced a much more expensive Asus router that could not even put a 802.11N signal through one single wall :) Also you can just as well buy a wireless repeater for 30 bucks instead of two routers.

I actually need the second router because it's from it that I connect my PC
