The 280x is somewhat outdated for 1080p ultra settings gaming, but it will run games fine at low to medium settings.

You can get used GTX 970s, 1070s, and 1080s for a great price on the used market these days, so I'd buy one of those if you have the budget for them.

Well... it's a pretty old card, and wasn't top of the line when it came out so an upgrade to a newer card will do you well. However you probably still are fine for 1080p medium-high. It depends on if you want more frames and/or better detail, and have the extra money lying around to spend on a newer GPU. If you want to upgrade, I'd recommend finding something used, like maybe a 970, 980, or 980 Ti. If you want to spend more, 1080s are fairly cheap used as well

not neccecarly, but 3gb of Vram is getting a bit low for modern titles.

R9 290x, rx 580 8 GB, R9 390x 8GB, gtx 1060 6 GB are all good options. 970 only has 3,5GB of good memmory so she suffers a bit in modern titles, though not to the same degree as the r9 280x

Technically true, but it is based on HD 7970 GHz, which was the top AMD card back in 2012.

Anyways, it will manage 1080p at medium settings, but if you have the budget, there are some nice deals on used cards.

... this is GPUs we’re talking about. Not CPUs. GPU tech has moved a LOT farther in that time. That’s like saying the GTX 670 was based on the 580. Yeah, maybe, but it probably compares to like a 1050 Ti

I upgraded my r9 280x to a 1060 3GB last year, stuff like GTA-V runs perfectly at 1080p 60+ fps at high settings.

The 3GB is barely enough so if you play games that need more go with the 6GB version or go for a used 970 or something.

used 970 sadly isnt much better than a 1060 3 GB (its mostly the Vram that ruins the entire 1060 3GB)

970 effectivly only has 3,5gb of Vram at its disposal, the last 500mb are at a speed reduction. so yes, it has 4GB of Vram, but you should not use the last 500mb

670 is Kepler, 580 Fermi.

The GTX 680 is GK104 and was again seen in the GTX 770 though

To be honest, a 980 is on par with the 1060 and 580...

and your R9 280X is gonna be say about 1050Ti level.... you will really want at least a 1070, 980Ti or even a Vega 56 to see a huge boost.

It doesn't matter if it is GPU or CPU, truth is truth.

280x was just a re-badge of HD 7970 GHz edition. As @F7GOS said, GTX 770 was exact same card as GTX 680, just with model number changed.

Would you argue that RX580 is not based on RX480?

Anyways, at no point did I claim that it is top tier card now, but it is based on what was a top tier card back in 2012.

It was based on a top tier card of the previous generation, but it was not a top tier card of it's generation. So... Yeah. Thanks for making that clear. That's what I was trying to say. To say the GTX 770 was a top tier card is also incorrect, because there were 5 cards above it (780, 780 Ti, and the 3 titans).
