HDMI Cable

DRHov3y

I am going to be purchasing a new 4k TV. I have it all picked out to utilize Dolby Vision but am wondering what kind of HDMI cable is required. I have looked into this but just can't grasp it. The items I am going to purchase are (they are within my budget so don't bother suggesting replacing items):

TV: Vizio P55-F1

Cable Box: Apple TV 4k

Receiver: Either Yamaha RXV385, Denon AVRS540BT or Sony STRDH790

I will also eventually be getting an Xbox One X.

I know that it is digital signal so really the cable doesn't matter and that I don't have to splurge for the most expensive cable as it won't give me a better picture, but I just want to make sure that I can enjoy the Dolby Vision (as that is the reason for getting this setup). They all have different specs (speeds), some say HDR others don't. These are my choices for HDMI cables:

Cheap: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B014I8SP4W/ref=twister_B016I3XG0S?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Mid-Range: https://www.costco.ca/WireLogic™-Sapphire-0.91-m-(3-ft.)-High-Speed-HDMI™-Cable-2-pack.product.100127566.html

Mid-range: https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/rocketfish-1-2m-4ft-hdmi-cable/10655693.aspx?

Expensive: https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/monster-monster-black-platinum-ultra-hd-high-speed-1-5m-5-ft-hdmi-cable-w-performance-indicator-lights-mc-bpl-pi-uhd-5/10394391.aspx?

Any help is appreciated!

The cheap one says it supports 4k at 60Hz so you should just get that one

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

Not sure if it's different now, but monster is just an overpriced brand.  The actual cost of the monster products is pennies compared to the retail price at least the last time I checked.  Nothing wrong with them, but the cheaper stuff usually works just as well.

How long of a cable(s) will you need? The rocketfish are fine, just wait until they go on sale or bundle price. Those cheap amazon cables are just that. Tend to break internally after one bad snag moving cables around. Just go with mid range and live with knowing you spent $10 extra for a lifelong cable. The rocketfish are thicker and have better shielding. Able to bend and plug in again and again no issues.

If you want a more “premium” cable, if you’re going shorter, check out audioquest pearl from Best Buy. You can find them on eBay pretty cheap too.

As @TheFlyingTraut mentions above, extra money only really buys durability (and brand recognition).  I've used these without issue: https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=15427 , but I'd caution against their use if you move your gear around a lot.  If you're one of those people that doesn't touch their cables for five years after installing them, then going cheap is probably fine.  If it stops working, you can buy 19 more before you reach of the cost of a monster cable.

It really depends on length. Anything over 15ft expect to pay a lot for the cable. If you need to go more than 25ft its realistic you'll be looking at hundreds if you want 4k HDR 4:4:4. Below 15ft, just get any high speed cable.
