Best cooler for 30$ (for overclocking)

So my friend is picking up a q6700,he's gonna overclock the heck out of it, his mobo does support overclocking, What cooler should he get (can be liquid, just thought air would be better for the price range)

Uh, no, you shouldn't overclock on a $30 cooler...

Agreed.

For overclocking on air, I would aim for a Noctua NH-D15 or a bequiet! Dark Rock Pro 4.

It's not just the RPM that matters, you also need a decently large heatsink. Especially if your CPU can barely handle 70C.

Also it depends on the case, if it's cramped with almost no vents then liquid cooling is better.

The speed of a fan is like one of 200 variables that affect cooling......

That 120mm radiator would not get you far with that 105W TDP chip.

For liquid cooling, I would recommend something with 240mm or bigger radiator. For air cooling, something with more beefy heatsink such as the ones Crunchy Dragon recommended. But be sure to check your case as most 240mm radiators wouldn't fit.

You'll have to step up your budget a fair bit.

The infamous Hyper 212 Evo supports Socket LGA 775 and while I'm not its biggest fan it works OK for moderate overclocking

CPU: Core i9 12900K || CPU COOLER : Corsair H100i Pro XT || MOBO : ASUS Prime Z690 PLUS D4 || GPU: PowerColor RX 6800XT Red Dragon || RAM: 4x8GB Corsair Vengeance (3200) || SSDs: Samsung 970 Evo 250GB (Boot), Crucial P2 1TB, Crucial MX500 1TB (x2), Samsung 850 EVO 1TB || PSU: Corsair RM850 || CASE: Fractal Design Meshify C Mini || MONITOR: Acer Predator X34A (1440p 100hz), HP 27yh (1080p 60hz) || KEYBOARD: GameSir GK300 || MOUSE: Logitech G502 Hero || AUDIO: Bose QC35 II || CASE FANS : 2x Corsair ML140, 1x BeQuiet SilentWings 3 120 ||

Well if you are going to push your cpu to the extremes you might want to get that Masterliquid 240 Lite. For comparison, my FX 8350 is pushing out 220W TDP and I have a Arctic Liquid Freezer 240 and that is doing a great job to keep the temperature just at the safe point.

The Q6700 can get a bit beyond 3GhZ so about a gigahertz

I wouldn't say a MasterLiquid Lite 240 is a potato cooler. Although a CPU cooler made out of actual potatoes - ooh, project idea!

I don't think a 240 costs $30.

Even so a 212 Evo can handle some pretty heavy overclocks if you're willing to go past 80C and have a lot of time to screw with the voltage
