1080p on 42"

cubies1982

Will 1080p movies look okay on a 42" television? What's the optimal resolution for such a large television? I'm watching Blu Ray movies.

If you sit far enough away yes. And 42in is such a large television? That's small in my book.

I'll sit about 6' away from the television.

Not really 'far away', I am sitting at ~ 45-50cm to my 49" TV and it does not bother me in any way. Movies look awesome at 1080p etc.

As for your question, @cubies1982, in my opinion the optimal resolution for what's above 40" should be 4K.

LE: I forgot to mention that my 49" tv is 4k.

It'll look perfectly fine as long as you're sitting at a typical TV distance. I wouldn't say you'd notice a difference unless you're sitting really close, are trying to read small text, or are comparing it side by side with a higher resolution TV.

I think 50" is fine for 1080p, but over that the difference is more noticeable. I've viewed content on a 65" TV pretty frequently and even that's not that bad at 1080p, it all depends on distance and what you're doing.

Don't worry about it. It'll be perfectly fine.

depends on the tv, but generally 42" looks fine at 1080p.  I have seen some in that size range that have really bad pixel density though.  I have 2 42" 1080p panasonic plasmas.  I bought one of them brand new, and it looks amazing even up close.  The other one was my parents old tv that they gave to me after they bought a large lcd tv.  It looks good from 8 or 10 ft away, but any closer than that and the image quality is pretty poor.  Its great for the kids play room though because it just gets covered in finger prints and the glass makes it very unlikely to crack when it gets hit by something.

I use a 42" Panasonic Plasma for my 1 and only PC VDU.

I sit so that my eyes are roughly 4-5 feet from it.

its fine, BUT you WILL notice a difference if you went from 1080p to 4k at that distance.

I've been in the market for a 4k replacment for about 2 years now, alass OLED is still 55"+ currently, and looks like the earliest 40-50" OLED's will come is late 2019 early 2020. So im just hoping my plasma holds out for that long as i cant stand PoS LCD tech, i'd rather find an old second hand 24" GDM FW900 CRT to tide me over.

So in answere to your questions.

Yes 1080p Movies will look ok asuming its a 'good' 1080p 42" screen. The optimal resolution would depend on your viewing distance but minimum would be 4k. if u were to sit closer than say 6 feet then 8k would be optimal (but they dont exists)

I wouldn't worry about it. My 50" 1080p Plasma TV looks great, as long as I'm not 2 feet away from the screen.

The "optimal" size of a TV depends entirely on viewing distance. And there's also a significant amount of personal preference involved too.
