Regretted PC Part/Peripheral Purchases

minervx

1) Micro ATX instead of Mini ITX (for a mid-range build)
2) A motherboard without wifi and bluetooth
3) A powerline adapter which basically gave me no speed boost.

4) A keyboard without backlighting
5) A keyboard that takes AA batteries instead of a USB charge
6) A 120 GB SSD (space is tight; 250 GB was preferable)

7) A 2.5" SSD instead of M.2 (because it feels outdated)

8) A mouse with 12 side buttons instead of (2-3).

9) A power supply that isn't dead-silent
10) A case with a power supply shroud that just amplifies the PSU noise.

rip

I should have got a different case, and maybe a different CPU cooler but with my chip I'm not sure it would help much, it pretty much hits a wall regardless of cooling ability.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

wow, seems like you really hate your build :/

only thing i regret is not going SLI when i had the chance :P

when all's said and done.  i like my build.  i didn't get anything significant wrong.  if i got the wrong mobo/case, or i couldn't overclock, that would've been bad.

i'm a perfectionist unfortunately.

I had a few pangs of regret about going with the Ryzen 1700 when the 8700K came out, but since I'm now saving up for an HEDT build (see sig for details) for later on in the year I don't really care anymore. Not that it matters as I don't play esports stuff anymore and have a 60hz monitor.

I built my PC in July though, so I had a few months of ignorant bliss before the 8700K came out. :P

Second regret about my purchasing decisions includes my Corsair K70 Lux. Not that it has had any problems, it's more about the fact that it's overpriced for what you get as compared to other more comparable keyboards. I was suckered into buying it by a friend though, so I guess it's his fault. ;)

Another one is my original choice of cases. I built my rig into a Be Quiet Pure Base 600, as I got a sizeable discount on it. However I didn't care for the aesthetic and the foam insert "feature" is little more than a gimmick. I have since switched it out for an NZXT S340 Elite and am enjoying it. I gave the original case to a relative for his birthday.

Last regret is my Antlion Modmic 5. Stupid adhesive pad won't stay attached to my headphones, but I don't have the space necessary for a full fledged microphone setup yet.

New Build (The Compromise): CPU - i7 9700K @ 5.1Ghz Mobo - ASRock Z390 Taichi | RAM - 16GB G.SKILL TridentZ RGB 3200CL14 @ 3466 14-14-14-30 1T | GPU - ASUS Strix GTX 1080 TI | Cooler - Corsair h100i Pro | SSDs - 500 GB 960 EVO + 500 GB 850 EVO + 1TB MX300 | Case - Coolermaster H500 | PSUEVGA 850 P2 | Monitor - LG 32GK850G-B 144hz 1440p | OSWindows 10 Pro.

Peripherals - Corsair K70 Lux RGB | Corsair Scimitar RGB | Audio-technica ATH M50X + Antlion Modmic 5 |

CPU/GPU history: Athlon 6000+/HD4850 > i7 2600k/GTX 580, R9 390, R9 Fury > i7 7700K/R9 Fury, 1080TI > Ryzen 1700/1080TI > i7 9700K/1080TI.

Wish I didn't triple screen

Wish I held out for 1080ti over 1070

I think that is it though to be honest.

Edit nvidia 3d vision was a waste... but it was a gift, after getting a vive its totally underwhelming. Same sorta thing could be said about my TrackIR after getting my vive its SUPER not used anymore.

I would imagine triple screens to be good for productivity.  I helped build a PC for a friend that daytrades stocks and cryptos; he likes the triple setup.  However, for entertainment and gaming, it would definitely be more immersive to have one big screen with a high(ish) resolution.

Multimonitor gaming is atrocious for two glaring reasons:

Bezels.

Fish-eye FOV.

I dont find it to offer much at all over 2 screens in terms of productivity, it's actually SUPER easy to lose windows you have. The only practical reason I found to have 3 monitors over 2 was video editing which I screwed with briefly and then never again.

On top of that its very warm sitting between them (At least 144hz ones), it takes up a TON of desk real-estate even on a triple monitor arm. Games are super hard to power on it as well above 60 and even if you can it stretches them out like fucking crazy. I am just waiting for either 4k ultrawide or Super Ultrawide to bail on the triple setup.

The fish-eye FOV is what kills it for me, I can "meh" the bezels but the warping of the image just kills it.

In 1996 I spent $200 on a TNT2 PCI.  really bad buy that was.

Other than that I really haven't regretted too much, maybe putting a celeron 633 on an older AT motherboard.

beleive it or not the biggest part i regret buyng is my 1080ti

every peice of common sense told me to get a 1060, but i saw the "purchase now on paypal finance" button on the website and just thought "f**k it"

now i'm running a card WAY over-specced for the rest of my system (1080p monitor)

everything else has been pretty sensibly purchased on a reasonable budget and ive been happy with. hell, even the NVIDIA 3DVISION kit i bought back in the day i was still happy with despite the fact it was dead tech from day1 :)
