Secuirty Thread

mitchpman13

So lately I've been studying up for school, finally decided to go to school to become an IT security specialist. I noticed LTT doesn't have any sort of security type of forums/threads. I know they get tossed in the general topics like the incident with meltdown and spectre.

Any chance of adding a new spot for security topics?

There's not enough content to justify a whole section for it, especially as we already have a huge number of sections.

"Security" is way too broad. We already have networking, programming, operating systems, and tech news sections. Those should cover security pretty well

Spoiler

Q: Do I have a virus?!
A: If you didn't click a sketchy email, haven't left your computer physically open to attack, haven't downloaded anything sketchy/free, know that your software hasn't been exploited in a new hack, then the answer is: probably not.

Q: What email/VPN should I use?
A: Proton mail and VPN are the best for email and VPNs respectively. (They're free in a good way)

Q: How can I stay anonymous on the (deep/dark) webzz???....

A: By learning how to de-anonymize everyone else; if you can do that, then you know what to do for yourself.

Q: What Linux distro is best for x y z?

A: Lubuntu for things with little processing power, Ubuntu for normal PCs, and if you need to do anything else then it's best if you do the research yourself.

Q: Why is my Linux giving me x y z error?

A: Have you not googled it? Are you sure StackOverflow doesn't have an answer? Does the error tell you what's wrong? If the answer is no to all of those, message me.

Pick a section and make a thread. Just creating new section isn't going to create more content.

So what are we talking about here? Best programming practices? Running firewalls? Stopping air gap attacks? Arguing about whether Ryzen is susceptible to Spectre or not? That's just simply way too general of a field to really fit into one subforum, and while it looks like there is alot of talk about it now, that's only because Meltdown and Spectre are hot topics at the moment. Give it a month and it will die down.

ENCRYPTION IS NOT A CRIME

This is my first post here so take that for what you will.... everyone above has valid points all the sections are general enough to create their own little security threads for each event that's relevant or you can find some other great sources online for in-depth information when it comes to different cyber security topics.
