New SamSung 960 Firmware Update Might Cause Freezes & Perf Issues

A few days ago Samsung has released new firmware for the 960 series SSDs. It's reported throughout the web that multiple end-users are seeing issues with application freezes or a sudden drop in performance.

From the looks of it involves firmware update 3B6QCXP7 and 3B7QCXE7, specifically for the 960 series NVMe M2 drives (both EVO and Pro). While we cannot see how big the user-base affected is, we simply wanted to put out the word as hey, better stay safe and do not upgrade to this firmware just yet.

This is a bit concerning being a 960 EVO 512GB owner. I'm glad I don't have Samsung Magician installed tho. What a blunder for Samsung, especially with more NVMe drives entering the market.

960 Evo 250GB owner here, don't have Magician installed and haven't updated the firmware since building my PC, so I don't have this issue. Kinda sloppy of Samsung though..

A NVME SSD will feel similar to a SATA SSD in daily use because they have similar access times vs spinning rust.  

Additional benefits include ePeen/internet points; although not needing to allocate more cables + drive slots/bays is definitely nice.

It's bound to happen and if they issue a fix quickly, I see no problems with it.

Hot damn, I just installed a 960 EVO this morning. Kind of glad I opted against installing the Samsung Magician software for the moment.

Guess I won't be updating or in the very least checking the status before hand. Hopefully they fix they quick.

 

Don't own a 960 Evo/Pro but I plan on getting two Evo's though for my upcoming build. Didn't except to hear this sort of story beforehand...

 

I always wonder how this sort of stuff hits public release (In general. Not just Driver/Firmware but like Game Updates too)... Do companies have small test groups or something and it slips by somehow?

I know this is about the Pro, but I have an Evo in one system with Magician software. Does it force updates on you (Windows 10 style), or do you still have to manually ok it? Generally speaking I only do a check and update on a SSD when I buy it, and after that, only do them if there are critical problems that need fixing. The Crucial M4 had one where it would go responsive every hour after 5184 power on hours. Obviously it took a long time to show up and it was discovered before mine hit the time, and firmware was provided to fix it.
