Imgur Data Breach 2014

Guest

Imgur - the site to find some of the freshest memes had about 1.7million user credentials stolen in 2014 however only just found out about it as that data was passed to the famous haveibeenpwned.com owner Troy Hunt.

This is just further evidence of the benefit/risk of reusing passwords. I wonder how many email accounts were compromised because of this.

Dear Imgurians,

On November 23, Imgur was notified of a potential security breach that occurred in 2014 that affected the email addresses and passwords of 1.7 million user accounts. While we are still actively investigating the intrusion, we wanted to inform you as quickly as possible as to what we know and what we are doing in response.

Well at least this didn't include any PIIs (Considering they don't make you provide that stuff, that's a given I guess). While I wouldn't be surprised that a significant percentage are still using the same passwords from 2014, I can't even remember what passwords that I used at the time. (Got a unique password for most sites and they change at least once a year if not more)

Why do people have accounts for Imgur in the first place?

How the hell else are you supposed to post images?

Also imgur is great for sharing images also if not one of the best.

Just by uploading them? :D

I've used Imgur for years, uploaded a lot of photos and never made an account. It's like having an account for Pornhub to watch videos, you don't need to.

I don't know why people don't just create different passwords based on random words/phrases/numbers from whatever/wherever (such as a show/book/game or just what's sitting on your desk), then right it down on a sticky note next to their monitor, or create a .txt file on Notepad - then you'll likely never run into the problem of your other accounts getting compromised when one service has a breach. It only takes a couple of seconds at most. I have a hard time feeling bad for people who get several/all of their accounts compromised over one breach.

Also, it's kind of interesting how Imgur didn't even know about this breach until recently, since it happened 3 years ago.

The only time I find imgur useful is when someone shares a picture in reddit. In this forum, I don't see imgur being used that often but going back to the breach, it only shows that reusing passwords is like opening your doors to a thief.

It's so that you can collect memes for future use without downloading them. The site is also growing more as a social media platform with messaging and the ability to follow single users.

Plus, they have folders now!

And as they grow they keep increasing the amount of censorship and gerrymandering of upvotes in order to get more advertisers.

I know. As they grow and become more popular, they will have to be more appealing to the masses, and sadly, strict Christian moms are part of the masses.
