XMP Profile Ryzen not working

Hey guys, I'm not very familiar with RAM overclocking / RAM speeds in general.

I have 3000Mhz RAM which only clocks in at 2100.

When I use XMP profile for 3000, my machine reboots a few times and goes back to 2100.

CPU    AMD Ryzen 5 1600

RAM  G.Skill Aegis DDR4-3000 DIMM CL16 Dual Kit (F4-3000C16D-16GISB) (Speccy recognizes each stick as F4-3000C16-8GISB)

Motherboard: Asrock AB350 Pro4 Bio Version 3.0

Any tips on how I could debug the issue?

Update your BIOS to 3.20, that's when the AGESA updates were added to that board.

Make sure your BIOs is on the latest version

Then set XMP, and change  the frequency down one step. I have Ripjaws V running at 3066mhz. It's rated for 3200mhz

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

XMP is an Intel trademarked thing, so it isn't guaranteed to work on AMD systems. It doesn't work on my Asus B350 which can't get my Hynix M-die memory to 3200 MHz.

That said, I've used the mATX version of your board with identical memory (C16 3000 MHz Hynix M-die) in a friend's system and that board had no issues with it. That board has some of the best memory support of any AM4 board I've seen.

So I just updated 3.30  (skipped 3.20, is that a mistake?) (took the newest one in the list...)

And nothing's changed:

It lists my RAM still as 2133 and this is also reflected in windows task manager. Speccy even shows even weirder numbers:

And nothing's changed:

Go into your bios and click on the Exit tab. Load Setup/Bios Defaults. Save and reboot back into the bios.

Enable the 2933 XMP Profile, then lower the frequency from 2933 to 2666 and try that. Click DRAM Timing Configuration and double check the timings selected are 16-18-18-18-38. Make sure the DRAM Voltage is 1.35. You can also increase this to 1.36, 1.37 (no higher than 1.40v) if it refuses to work.

When you save changes and reboot.. go right back in to the bios and make SURE it says 2933 or 2666. Whatever you've chosen. Don't just apply changes and reboot to Windows. The overclock may fail and you'll see 2133 in Windows.

Look above that at Dram Frequency. That's the line (multiplied by 2) that tells your actual frequency.

So I just did exactly that. Reset UEFI. Set xmp to 2666, check timings. And reboot back into bios. While rebooting the machine kind of turns itself on and off a few times and then boots normally. Going back into the bios and nothing's changed. But the selected profiles are still there.

The power cycling is normal, and expected when modifying anything to do with memory. XMP is an intel technology and AMD does its best to make it work, but Ryzen is simply too new to have all the kinks worked out. There are settings you can test/try, but you can also keep lowering the frequency and see if that works. Try to get it off 2133 using any frequency.

Try manually changing the timings to 18-18-18-18-40. DRAM Voltage to 1.40v. Command Rate to 2T. I just noticed from one of your screenshots your ram's in the incorrect slots. Put it in A2 and B2. Reset bios to defaults and try again. For some reason it seems to matter. Try that first.

Fixed :D

The tip to swap the RAM from A1/B1 to A2/B2 solved it, XMP works flawlessly now
