Vega or 1080ti for future proof build

Hello everyone!

 

Here are my specs for those interested:

 

Gigabyte Gaming 3 B350M

Ryzen 1700 OC'ed to 3.9 with Kraken liquid cooler

32 Gb Trident Z Ram at 2933

Powercolor PCS+ R9 290

250 Gb SSD (Gonna need to upgrade this)

2-1 TB HDD 

Corsair Air 240 case

 

So I currently use my PC for mainly video editing in programs like Premiere and After Effects, but I do do the occasional gaming on it. After wiping the rust off my keyboard, I decided to open up Arma 3 last night and wow, I didnt need to worry about the sound of a jet taking off because my GPU was doing that for me. Fan speed were between 80-90% with thermals in the upper 70s and breaking 80 every now a then. Now last week, I had my case in a different orientation and with that, the GPU broke 90c so I turned the game off. Totally unacceptable.

 

I know my case does help. Its small and restrictive on airflow, but its portable (though idk why that matters because I would still need to bring my three monitors, and peripherals, so I made a kinda dumb choice by getting a small case. Live and learn) I was to upgrade that 290 to either a 1080/ti or a vega card. My current GPU has been nothing but trouble and I dont know if thats from AMD drivers, or the GPU. I kinda wanna switch to nVidia just because of premiere. But I am worried with Vega looming around the corner, prices may drop after I buy one. 

 

So what I am asking is should I go with a 1080 or the Ti, or wait for Vega. I was looking at the water cooled AIO GPU because they may work better in my case. I think I can make room for one.

I wouldn't necessarily buy a Vega, but I would wait for it to release to see if it effects GPU prices. Right now, I would NOT buy a GPU unless I wanted to waste money. Hopefully Vega can help lower the prices of cards, but we'll have to see if it performs better than a 1080ti (I doubt).

I really, really do no think Vega will match the 1080ti. Maybe in Ashes of the Singularity when paired with an 1800x or something but that's about it. However if you're thinking future proofing it wouldn't hurt to wait like 1 more week or so to get the reviews

1080 Ti, Vega will be a 1080 competitor. Although, Vega may be better for rendering. Wait for Vega rendering benchmarks.

Ask again when reviews come out, but also don't be that concerned with future proofing.  Unless money isn't an issue to you at all, the 1080 ti won't be toppled any time soon.

From all appearances Vega will be gtx1080 level, nvidia probably won't release volta for that instead milking some more profit from pascal dropping some of their prices. 1080TI is probably the best you'll be getting until ~May

An interesting question. It depends on a couple factors. The first being whether games will end up using more than 11GB of video memory in the next 5-7 years. If the answer is yes then you get a sticky situation where regardless of performance Vega minimums will be higher than the 1080ti's. Then there's the question of Vega's actual performance now*, and just how much it will improve over the next four years as drivers mature. There's also the question of how well RX Vega will respond to undervolting.

 

 

 

*Be interesting to see if Bits & Chips was telling the truth when they stated that AMD is sandbagging.

Hell no. If DX12 games ever come out and Vulkan too. Maxwell basically has negative a sync support. Also from the sounds of it Volta is a pascal refresh so my money is on AMD now.

We don't know enough about Vega yet. 

Also, there's no such thing a future proof..

but a 1080ti or even a 1080 would do the job for quite a while.

1. there is no such thing as futureproofing.

2. 1080ti as Vega probably won't beat it.

3. Sell the 1080ti if Vega or any new card is better and have a very low cost of ownership.

 

I personally say always but the most expensive GPU you can afford, as it is the only thing in the system that matters.

If you only game occasionally, it's not immediately clear to me why you would want to buy a GPU as expensive as a 1080 Ti or 1080 in the first place. That aside, what resolution and framerates are you wanting to play at?

I game occasionally right now, but I used to game alot....I mean ALOT. The main reason I havent is due to this GPU. I have a 4k monitor that is Freesync, but on Arma and games like that, I have to play in 1080p because 4k is unplayable. I prefer 60 fps, but I would also like a million dollars, we dont always get what we want. 

 

 

I really just want to buy the best card I can afford, that way it can last me longer. I have gotten a many years off this 290, I would like to do the same with the new card. Resolution and textures can only go so high, so a top tier card should last for awhile I would think. Also, video editing would be better with the newer card because right now, AMD kinda sucks on Premiere and this current AMD card has put a sour taste in my mouth.
