How to control case fans based on CPU temps, not MB?

Hi,

I recently finished my build, which includes Gigabyte z170 HD3 and 4x 3pin fans. The MB has 1x4pin CPU fan; 2x4pin Sys_fan 1/2 and 1x3pin Sys_fan 3, so I use Y-splitters on headers 1 and 2.

In Bios I can set the fan curve (normal, silent, full speed, manual), but I think it's based on temps from sensors on the MB, not the CPU sensor, because in HWMonitor when stress-testing with Aida64 the 4 case fans' RPM remain the same as while idling.

So is there a way to make case fans (and their curve) follow CPU temps instead of MB? Right now there's no point in that curve, because MB temps barely change and fans don't speed up, only the CPU fan does.

I tried SpeedFan, but my fans don't show up there (or I can't find them) and the other option I'm considering is the fan headers on my Graphics (Strix 1080). That way I can at least control them based on GPU temps, but 1) I prefer CPU and 2) More visible cables... I might upload screenshots later, when I'm home.

Just use SpeedFan

If you don't see the fans in SpeedFan try setting different option for them in BIOS. For example, on my motherboard I have to use NORMAL mode or SILENT mode in BIOS otherwise they won't show up in SpeedFan.

Actually I used this same video of Jayz for a guide. Mine were set to Normal and didn't appear, but after work I'll follow your advice and try the other Bios fan modes.

Would it be possible to have a PWM fan hub connected to the CPU Fam header, then have all fans run of that header if there all roughly identical specifications? 

I once did the unthinkable, back many headphones ago...

Well, they aren't. Cpu fan is a Be quiet! that comes with the cooler; 2x rear are NZXT included in the s340 Elite case and the additional 2x intake are Corsair SP120 for better static pressure for the limited air space on the front panel (and good deal on the used market). So I don't really know how good a hub is going to be for this setup... (?)

Depends if you want them to run independent or not. Gigabyte is worst mobo for fan control in general. It has only 1-2 true PWM headers with CPU_FAN and CPU_OPT. Rest are 3pin headers. And as such, they don't obey any other profile than auto. I'm not at desktop right now to post how my settings are. But I just reconfigured front fans to follow GPU temps.

I've tried different fan modes in Bios, but SpeedFan still doesn't detect anything (attached photo). I think mobo's chip is not supported.

 

Well, as I said in the 1st post, I have 3 sys_fan headers and 2 of them are 4 pin. I can set custom curve in Bios, the problem is that they read Mobo's temp and are always in Idle RPM and I want them to read CPU temp, so they can speed up under load. Unfortunately no CPU_OPT, only CPU_FAN.

 

I might connect the front 2 fans to the GPU headers, but I don't know if they will use the same curve as the GPU fans, or I can control them separately.

 

What will happen if I use a fan hub with different RPM fans?
