Power supply question

Pokemonking81

I have a dell precision 690 with the 1000w psu, and it only has dual six pins and I want to hook up a 6970 to it,so I'm wondering if there is a 8 pin eps to 8 pin pci adapter (the eps is used for a gpu riser). I could use molex but the molex comes out of a block connector with three strands, two with two sata connectors each, and one with 3 molex and a floppy connector, that kinda sketches me out to use an adapter on. Circled in blue is the block connector and circled in red is the 8 pin eps.  This psu is not going in a normal computer, I want to add a gpu to the dell. T7x5Pxo.png

Well that isn't an ATX form factor PSU so I doubt you'll want to use that in an everyday system, my friend.

It's not going in a everyday system.

later edit: ah, i thought you want to use this psu in a regular compute.

My advice would be to find a faulty atx power supply and open it up to desolder its cable harnasses (connectors and wires)

Then open this power supply and wire those  to this power supply.

Wires are easy to figure out .. yellow is 12v , red is 5v , orange is 3.3v , black is ground ... purple is 5v standby ..

The dell psu has some blue wires which i think are for 5v standby or the equivalent of PS_ON or POWER_GOOD .. should be some text on the circuit board making it easy to figure out where to plug things.

Anyway, basically you have 5  12v rails, each capable of 18A  ( 5x18a x 12v = 1080 watts) but IN TOTAL you can't exceed 950w on the 12v ... and substracting the 3.3v and 5v which are probably derived from 12v using dc-dc converters ,you probably have around 850w on 12v available .. divided by 5 rails that's about 170 watts.

So i'd say it's safe to put ONE 6+2 pci-e connector on one rail (up to 3 rails) ... leave one rail for the atx 24pin connector and some sata connectors, one rail for cpu 8 pin

However, the power supply may actually have the 5 rails joined together inside the psu in which case you can probably go up to 4 x 6+2 pci-e connectors without any problems.

later edit: open the case and figure out which connectors are on which rails.. then put your pci-e connectors on the rails that will be less used.

Would a 6 to 8 pin adapter be fine with this power supply and the 6970?

System specs again

2 Xeon x5355

20gb of fb ddr2

2 7200rpm drives

@mariushm That suggestion is a bit out of my realm, but thanks anyway.
