Anyways, it's pretty cool that a 2.5 year old CPU more than keeps up with latest gen chips in serious workloads.  

It's also a little annoying really.

TechDeals has been putting out video comparing the 7700K and 1600X vs a 2600K overclocked to 4.5Ghz, and it's amazingly how well some older chips still hold up.

I myself have decided if Threadripper doesn't deliver, and I don't want to slap down over 1K for 7820X or 7900X + motherboard, I might just try and pick up a 5960X/6900K or 6950X second hand and plop that into my system.

With a little overclock it'll keep me purring along until the next gens. Although that new full system itch really wants to be scratched

I think the actual issue is that Sandy Bridge was so brilliant that Intel surveyed the situation and pushed all of the improvements into areas that consumers really don't see unless it's at 15w parts.  You've got to either buy Mobile or Ultra-expensive (i.e. Servers) to see sizable boosts since.  It's the reason why every mainstream K SKU has held up so well and, unless you've got a 1080 or 1080 Ti, you pretty much don't need an upgrade... still.

If you pre-ordered your chip from B&H when their prices were inflated yesterday morning, their prices have been changed to fall in-line with everyone else.  Shoot them an email or give them a call and they will adjust your price and/or refund you the difference.

Looks like with the newest bios update Tweaktown is now reporting the 7900k is beating the 6950x in gaming across the board...as it should..

The issue is that the normal 7900K results were done on older BIOS versions, while the new ones are done on the latest BIOS versions that support Turbo 3 without any software requirements. You will see results in line with the better performing 7900X results, but I do know some other media who were getting the same low gaming scores I was, and that was because Turbo 3 wasn't working.

 

Memory increase from 2133Mhz to 2666Mhz with the same timings also makes a difference in the gaming results. Ashes of Singularity is one of our outliers, but that is most likely because they have to optimize the code for the CPU, just like had to be done for Ryzen.

TweakTown got a new BIOS update that fixes the gaming issue. 7900X now consistently faster than the 6950X and matching/beating the 7700K.

I thought those were in the original release yesterday?   We were posting those graphs earlier today.

 

It single-core turbos to the same level as the 7700k on a very similar core.  And water is wet.   Though the 7700k is the better gaming CPU in nearly all cases still.
