Is it worth me upgrading/rebuilding?

Hey guys!

Last time I built a new PC for myself was in 2013. I built a mid-range gaming PC build back then, here are the specs.
CPU: i5-3570K - overclocked to 4.2GHz
GPU: GTX 760 (stock)
RAM: 16GB DDR3 1600MHz
SSD: Kingston 120GB
HDD: WD 1TB

PSU: RM850
Case: Corsair 760T

I don't need a new case or power supply, they're great. CPU and RAM are still solid I'd say, but that GPU needs urgent attention.

My question is... Upgrade the GPU to something like a GTX 1070. At £378 GBP, that's the cheaper option
or... Just build a new rig with these specs:

CPU: i5-7600K @ stock 3.8GHz
GPU: GTX 1070
RAM: 16GB DDR4 2400MHz
M.2 SSD: WD 250GB (boot drive)
HDD: WD 1TB, plus my old WD 1TB as an 'archive' drive.
PSU: RM850 (Already own)
Case: Corsair 760T (Already own)

Any advice or opinions would be great!

Don't get i5 when Ryzen 5 is more future proof
Change CPU to Ryzen 1400/1600, OC RAM or get high speed RAM, get any B350 mobo and you're good.

What's your budget?

The only reason to upgrade your PC, is if you having major issues running the games you want to play. In this case, I would just say upgrade the GPU and see if it helps a bunch, and if it doesn't you can decide what next you need to upgrade.

Even if you get i5 don't get the kabylake, the generation has some thermal issues

Ivy bridge is still reasonably capable, all you really need to upgrade here is your GPU (Unless you plan to play 1080 144hz, then an i7 is needed).

Please quote our replys so we get a notification and can reply easily. Never cheap out on a PSU, or I will come to watch the fireworks.

What's your budget?

Hmm, I kinda have an issue with AMD CPUs, every one I've had has died. So through no fault of my own I tend to stick to the intel side of things. Had this one for 4 years now and never a problem, overclocked well too. Budget is resting around £1000 GBP but could go higher in another payslip's time.

If I were you I might just get a 3770k and 1080.

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

Ryzen is power efficient unlike the old FX CPUs
However, if you really want to stick with Intel, get an i7

I wouldn't bother mate, the i5 should still be good enough, same with everything else except the 760 maybe... If I were you I would just get a new GPU and see how it goes for now, save the money until you might really need it.

With £1000 I would get an i7 3770k aND gtx 1080 ti, it will be miles better than that new build you are considering

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

Thanks everyone for your input, it's been really helpful.

I think the general consensus is:

No it's not worth spending that amount of money on that rig, when there are much better upgrades that can be done to my system.
The only problem I have at the moment is that my OS is on a WD Green hard drive, which has made my PC painfully sluggish on startup, and in general use of the pc. I bought a MS Surface Pro 4 in October and I barely even use my PC anymore unless there's a game I really want to play :L.

My PC is just generally bloated with bits of software I've installed on it over the years for different things, and I just wanted a clean slate and an OS on an M.2 SSD so it would be super quick..

Nevertheless, I think in actual games, the GPU is holding me back, so I'll look to the 1070 or 1080 to upgrade to and see where it takes me.

Thanks a lot guys!
