Toshiba ending 15k RPM HDD production

In an article on Guru3d, it has been published that Toshiba sees no reason to continue production of the 15k RPM HDDs.

Toshiba currently has six 15k rpm models listed in various pricewatch engines, the largest capacity one is a 600GB model. Larger capacities would have certainly be possible, but Toshiba doesn't see any demand in that as at that performance and volume level the demand for SSDs simply is bigger. Also the price per GB compared to an SSD does not make much sense anymore they state, as such the 15K rpm hard drives are too expensive compared to the significantly faster SSDs. 

Given the price per GB for these drives, I can't see them moving too many of them, but if you have a 15k RPM device in your array or were hoping to build a 15k RPM HDD array, it looks like your options are closing...  

 

Edit: So just to add my speculation from some of the additional information I know about, this is probably a business decision on their part to help out with the financial woes they are suffering from the completed purchase of Westinghouse Electric (the nuclear side especially, where they announced a loss of $6.3 Billion US in December/January).  This has also led for them to begin a sale of their NAND unit with some big businesses in the process of bidding for it and expected to be completed by April 1st.  One interesting bit from the Nikkei is that there are several companies actually forming alliances in this bid process.  I'll be really interested in seeing what Toshiba looks like as a company by next year.

Yeah 15K drives didn't make a lot of sense. Too hot, loud, and they died too much. SSDs are great though

I dont see the point in them to be fairly honest, nobody uses SAS drives in servers anymore because it is ageing hardware and there is becoming no point for them as we come into the high capacity ssd era, cough cough Whonnock Server

Agreed, problem with SSDs now is that there is getting to be such a demand that production can't keep up...  Hopefully, this will free up some of Toshiba's resources to focus more on NAND production, but I have a feeling that they have too many other financial issues...  Honestly for my mass storage device, I went with the 5400 RPM HDDs to keep the long term operating temps down.

err... how about every HP and dell rackmount server that rolls off the production line to date has a bay of sas drives in the front? they're now usually populated with SAS SSD's, but SAS itself isnt on its way out yet any time soon.

Honestly, while this news will probably help Toshiba with some of their financial woes, I'm thinking that there is some serious blood in the water trouble for them this year...  Going back through some of the news from December/January until now, they suffered a major loss from the acquisition of Westinghouse Nuclear (something around $6.3 Billion US) and to make up for it were planning to sell off a major stake in their NAND unit.  Now they are trying to get Westinghouse off of their books.  As for the NAND side of the deal, TSMC and Foxconn are currently looking into bidding.  Will be kinda curious to see what is left of Toshiba by next year or if they can rebuild themselves.

I remember the old Velociraptor Drives. 10k rpm iirc, maybe 15k. I still want some to play with. Wont replace my SSD but it has its uses.

That same Foxconn that builds all the Apple devices...  One good bit of news is that there are other companies looking at forming an alliance to purchase this side of the Toshiba business.  Probably one of the more promising ones is a deal between Western Digital and Micron.  Per the article below, WD is pursuing this because:

i have a 10k drive and its slow as a sloth through syrap

Once SSD tech became not-shit (and basically when Toshiba bought OCZ), 15,000 RPM hard drives became pointless.

It would make no sense fiscally for Toshiba to continue this when SSDs of a similar capacity would be easier to QC and probably not fail as fast as a hard drive of this kind would.

Hard disk storage will most likely be used for a very long time from now. Reason being is because it's just so so much less expensive to get high density reliable storage compared to ssds as of now.

Yeah they're very expensive compared to regular consumer one, very large gap in price. I was wondering were they really that much more expensive to produce.

Also I remember reading years ago that WD planned 20k RPM drive heh.
