4K Video Editing Build

Hi all!

I’m looking into building a computer for editing video. Right now, I’ll be editing 1080p, but will edit 4K video in the future. I have built 3 computers so far, so I have some idea what to do/look for.

I only need to buy the components of the computer, as I have the OS, monitor, etc. I’m looking for suggestions on what this build should be.

Ideally, I’m looking at between $1000 - $2000 (Canadian currency, by the way). If I can do a build for no more than $1500 (which is about $1100 USD), that would be swell. Obviously, I live in Canada.

Some component ideas so far:

I’m interested in an Intel i7, but would be open to suggestions.

16 GB of DDR4 ram, for now.

An SSD, either 250 or 500 GB, and maybe a 2 TB HDD

I’m not entirely sure if I need a GPU or not. Do I?

I’m open to anything, so let’s hear some suggestions! Thanks, all!

Make a 1700x/1800x build, greater money management than a broadwell-e chip right now.

the  @herman mcpootis  list is great baseline,  the thing that i would change are:

-RX 480/470 8gb instead of the gtx 1060, because it as 2 GB more vram, and video editing, especially at 4k, love vram ( i do have a 980 ti and when I use premiere with 4k video I see the vram get full very fast)

-if you can I would spend the extra money on a bigger SSD, especially because usually the jump from doubling the capacity  does not come with doubling the price ( as it happens with 1tb ssd)

-I would take a better PSU ( wattage wise), something in the 650w range so that you can overclock in the future if you want and when you are stock the fan doesn't spin at all

Very good suggestions so far! Canada definitely gets screwed on prices, let me tell you.

Does the 8gb on the RX 480 make a big difference compared to the 6gb on the GTX 1060?

Will the 212 be sufficient if, say, I'm rending a video for half an hour or an hour?

Will this build be relatively good at 4K video editing/rendering, possibly with a modification or two?

I'm looking at getting a 500gb Samsung 850 EVO. I've used it in two builds so far and am super happy with it.

Also, I'm considering using a Fractal Design Define R4 for my case.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I really appreciate it!
