IBM has managed to store data on a single atom! The new Atomic Hard Drive as they call it has nothing to do with destruction but in fact has the ability to store a bit of data on a single atom.

A hard drive today takes about 100,000 atoms to store a single bit of data -- a 1 or 0. The IBM Research results announced Wednesday show how much more densely it might someday be possible to cram information.

How much more densely? Today, you can fit your personal music library into a storage device the size of a penny. With IBM's technique, you could fit Apple's entire music catalog of 26 million songs onto the same area, Big Blue said.

Atomic-level storage could radically change our computing devices. A smartwatch or ring could carry all your personal data, or businesses could keep potentially useful information that today they can't currently afford to preserve. And socking away lots of information is important for artificial intelligence, which has a voracious appetite for data used to train machine-learning systems to do their jobs.

Thank god you pointed this out and gave clear indication this wasn't an atomic bomb. I can see how people would get the words bomb and hard drive mixed up.

im just imagening the insaine amount of data rot that would occur... that has to be pretty bad probably. its cool to see this stuff tho

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

How long would such storage last? That atom had better be a stable, as non-reactive as possible isotope.

Ketchup is better than mustard.

GUI is better than Command Line Interface.

this doesn't take into account the reading of data. we can already cram a shitton of data into a small space with tapedrives but you will never see that in a smart watch for obvious reasons.

What is data rot? I am assuming you mean data that becomes corrupt after a period of time?

Interesting.

I would like to see where this goes.

IBM has been making a scene in the tech world of late, maybe some of this stuff they a pushing will make it to the consumer market.

yep, data rot is the degredation of data over time, it is usiually not a problem but it can be for mainly SSDs because they leak electrons over time and degrade over useage
