RX 580 & 570, rebrands, coming in April

People seem to forget any 80ti card from nvidia is a rebranded titan nowadays, that pascal was just maxwell with a smaller node which gave better clocks. Talk about a refresh...

If amd wants to push the old chips with significantly better overclock, to help refining their manufacturing process and achieve good clocks for Vega to crush pascal, it could make sense.

Besides, you put a 480 at the same clocks as a 1060, and you've got a significantly better card from amd.

The x80Ti chip, is significantly cheaper than a Titan ever was, whereas when AMD refreshes their GPUs they end up being priced around the same as the cards they were replacing (at the time they replaced them).

Pascal is basically a higher clocked Maxwell on a smaller node, but Pascal GPUs also have more cores and aren't just a higher clocked variant of their Maxwell counterpart. Pascal isn't a straight refresh like the HD7000->200 series was or how the 200 series->300 series was. Let's look back a bit:

  • HD7750->R7 250 (identical core, higher clocked core/memory)
  • HD7770->R7 250x (identical core, higher clocked core/memory)
  • HD7850->R7 265  (identical core, higher clocked core/memory)
  • HD7870/ghz->R9 270/x  (identical core, higher clocked core/memory)
  • HD7950->R9 280 (identical core, higher clocked core/memory)
  • HD7970->R9 280x (identical core, higher clocked core/memory)
  • R7 260->R7 360 (identical core, higher clocked core/memory)
  • R7 265->R7 370 (identical core, higher clocked core/memory)
  • R9 285->R9 380 (identical core, higher clocked core/memory)
  • R9 290->R9 390 (identical core, higher clocked core/memory)
  • R9 290x->R9 390x (identical core, higher clocked core/memory)
  • GTX970->GTX1070 (15% more cores, much higher clockspeeds)
  • GTX980->GTX1080 (25% more cores, much higher clockspeeds)
  • GTX980Ti->GTX1080Ti (27% more cores, much higher clockspeeds)

So, of course, if the 500 series is to the 400 series as Pascal is to Maxwell, then it being a "refresh" doesn't matter (although I also wouldn't consider it a refresh). However, if it's what a refresh actually is, then it's going to be disappointing like the 300 series was.

Maybe next release with the money they will get with ryzen and vega they might be able to release a full product stack. If those two seĺ well of course

Hey, nVidia has rebrands of the 1060, 1070 and 1080 too with slightly higher clocks and faster memory. Worst part is that they didn't rename them.

I for one like an RX480 that can do 1500MHz+ with ease.

Right when the 1080Ti launched nVidia also released new 1060, 1070 and 1080 GPUs with faster memory and the ability to clock higher. They are the new 1060 1070 and 1080.

Edit: So they're shipping the cards with higher clocked memory because yields have gotten better and decided not to give it a new name because it's not different enough from the original. This is a good thing.

I don't see any improvements on the 1070 though.

This.   IDGAF is the 3rd and 4th card net single digit performance gains, or even negative gains.  Id be able to say i have a Quad GPU system... and arent those bragging rights cool.

Only thing better would be 8 way crossfire with 4 dual GPU cards :)

Edit  - a possible legit use case for something like that, 7 gamers 1 CPU would need less PCIE slots.

I did have plan a GPU compute power house with 4 GTX 690's, but since the GTX 690 is kinda a rare card, it would have cost too much to buy 4, but I still have the rack chassis for the project, it has 4 V7900's in it.

Yours faithfully

Why? It's an RX480. Any recent RX480 will clock pretty damn well considering AMD quietly made some process improvements back in October.

Also, this has been a long time coming now, you could've read the news and rumours on these things and held off your purchase.

I seem to have been living under a rock for the past few months :P I haven't heard a thing about these. I wonder how much of a difference the improvements will actually make...
