Getting people notified issue

Mod please lock/remove if you consider this post as useless/spammy

I have been using LTT for a long time enough to know when/how to quote people. It's simple, all you do is click on the left pointing arrow at the bottom of person's post

Or to get someone's attention you can also tag people like this: (typing @ symbol, then continue typing the name until it appears in the list, finally you click on that name. Make sure the name after clicking appears orange and you can hover around and click on it). Just like this down below

The point of this post is not to teach how to notify other people that you have replied. No, the point is not everybody knows how to do that.

In fact, a new person joining the forum would unable to know that at all. How would they know that by leaving a message w/o tagging or quoting people others will be notified.

They follow the topic by default if they make the topic, so they will receive a notification everytime someone replies to their topic, regardless if they quote, tag or simply leave a reply.

The only way of knowing that is by looking clicking at the small corner on top to see if a person follows your topic or not

Or by going through account settings and notification settings

And this option for the majority of user is disabled

On Tomshardware, every member upon joining (and they seem to not bother change it at all) get auto follow to the topic once they leave a reply.

I know this will give user a huge amount of notification when they leave it overnight.

Well now you may ask: I did not respond to the topic, what harm could that be done? I just came across a topic randomly. OP was asking if his PSU from a pre built was good. So people began to suggest him a better PSU.

After sometime, OP decided to buy a Thermaltake TR2 PSU (I am no specialist, but based on PSU TIER LIST UPDATED it is at the bottom of the page, i.e very bad) as a replacement for his bad prebuilt PSU (it was bad as knowledgeable people said). The problem is he did not quote nor tag anyone, no one bothers to check back too and no one was following the topic by default. Well, he ended up with that PSU eventually. If I recall correctly, he paired his PSU with some high end gaming components (a GTX 1060 and i5 maybe)

Some suggestions:

  • Check back on topic you follow often. Especially if you believe you can contribute something better than others
  • Follow/unfollow a topic is not that hard, it's just a click of a mouse
  • Remind people to quote/tag you.
  • (maybe) Have auto follow content you reply to check mark on.

I hope this topic raise some awareness on the importance of quoting or tagging people. Thank you.

Exactly! A CS only teaches you how to behave, not how to use

If they're a native English speaker it shouldn't be difficult to understand the forums.

I feel like there are too many buttons w/o any description

All the Quote, Share and mark as best answer buttons are all without any description unless you hover it.

Very easily fixed with a switch to XenForo.

No, but you post random links without any context. In here that stuff should be in Satus updates and still people think its worth of making new thread.
