MediaTek Helio X30 and X35 leaked-is MediaTek stepping up the game?

So, Exynos, Snapdragon and A-series mobile SoCs are rocking for flagship smartphones. But, what about mid range phones?

Well, some Chinese leaks say that MediaTek Helio X30 and X35 will launch in 2017.

The X30 will be a 10 core CPU with 2 A73 cores @2.8GHz, quad A53s @2.3 and quad A35s @2GHz.

 

Now what does that mean for day to day usage? Well, MediaTek has been using big.Medium.LITTLE technology which means there are power cores, perf/watt cores and low powered cores. Combine that with the TSMC 10nm architecture, and this will be one of the most efficent mobile SoCs. It's target will be smaller chinese companies.

 

Also there were some leaks about the X35. It will be a lower variant of X30, and target will be mid range phones.

As long as power consumption is low, it looks like it will be a good competitor to the Snapdragon line.

Reviews claimed the Helios X20 wasnt very good in terms of power efficiency, probably the same with the Helios X25. Regardlessly, Mediatek is targeting the mid range sector and we wont see these cpu's on flagships from HTC, LG, Sony and Samsung, since its either the mighty gpu of the Snapdragon or the great multicore and battery efficient Exynos.

Why does anyone need 10 cores on a phone/tablet's CPU?

You aren't using them all at the same time, it is supposed to help with power management. It uses the low power A35's for light loads and idle, the A53's for medium loads where the A35's aren't quite enough, and the power hungry A73's for very heavy loads such as some 3D mobile games.

I quite like the phones with mediatek chips... Sure I'd like the newest and best qualcom chip, but the prices for those flagship phones are horrendous and can't justify the expense. A mid-range phone with mediatesk CPU and 13Mp camera, 4g, 1080 or better screen can  be had for around $200 or less. I bought my lenovo k3 note about 2 years ago now for approx $170 and has been great, 8 core CPU (not big little), 1080, 4g etc and comes unlocked carrier, Android 6.0, unlocked bootloader etc. I have flashed maybe 4 different ROMs on this phone since I've had it and have hardly had any problems. The only things I would like to see really is 4k video, 4k screen, 3.1 USB type c and fast inernal memory chip to go with it.... unlickely I know as most USB C devices right now are still only USB 2.0, but should come soon, hopefully.
