What Should I Do With All These Drives???

Hola guys and gals,

My gaming PC consists of a HyperX M.2 480GB SSD, and a 2TB WD Black drive. I have also ended up collecting all these drives over the years for various reasons:

  • 500GB HGST 5400RPM (PS4 HDD that was replaced, 3 years old)
  • 500GB Seagate 7200RPM (From a dead HP laptop, 8 years old)
  • 500GB Seagate 7200RPM (From a Seagate external drive, 6 years old)
  • 500GB Seagate 5400RPM (From a dead LaCie enclosure, 3 years old)
  • 60GB Seagate 5400RPM (From a dead launch console PS3, 10 years old)

I mainly use my PC for gaming and streaming media around the house via ethernet (to PS3, PS4, Smart TV, etc). I have around 600GB worth of games that will mainly be on the G drive but a select few will be on the C drive. There's 100GB worth of photos (and growing) mainly because of my photography hobby. I haven't dabbled too much into Photoshop or Lightroom, but I'll be using it a lot more once I get my photos imported and organized from my laptop.

4TB External Drive used for backups except for games. Fastest drives should have Media Cashe & Media Cashe Databases

  • 3  Disks
    • C: 480GB SSD - OS, Programs, Pagefile, Previews, Media Cache,
    • D: 2TB WD Black - Users, Projects, Exports
    • G: 2TB 4x Raid 0 - Games, Media, (Could go for a RAID 5 with 1.5TB instead)
  • 4 Disks
    • C: 480GB SSD - OS, Programs, Previews, Media Cache
    • D: 2TB WD Black - Users, Projects, Exports
    • E: 1.5TB 3x Raid 0 5400RPM - Media, Pagefile
    • G: 500GB 7200RPM - Games

I would install the 4 500gb drives as a raid 10 array, and the 60 gb drive is probably garbage, as it's to small to really do much with. Where you install those is up too you, either a nas or your current rig would be useful. If you decide to build a nas, you can use the 60gb drive as a boot drive to install all the system files and os for the nas. 

 

 

Edit- after reading through your suggested options, DO NOT PUT THOSE DRIVES IN RAID 0. I cannot stress this enough. Those drives are very old, and could fail any minute. In raid 0, of one drive fails the entire array of data is lost. Raid 10 is a much better option.

Custom NAS using an PC if you have one, or maybe even within your main PC if you have enough drive bays. Since they are old drives I would definitely run them with some sort of redundancy RAID format to avoid data loss.

I don't why the mods didn't get my post. I posted NAS and it was deleted. Anyway... That's my opinion. Exactly what  I'm going to try with all of my extra drives.

Unless you need the space, leave them on the shelf until you do?  And when you do, install them in a RAID-1 configuration? 

 

If you don't need the space at the moment, no point in wasting electricity running them.  Figure a drive will cost $10/year to run 24/7.  1 year of run-time on 4 x 500gb would equal the purchase price of a 2Tb drive these days.

Thanks for the help, really appreciate it. I've already done diagnostic tests on all drives previously and they all came up clean. Isn't JBOD almost as bad as RAID 0 in terms of failure rate? It does not even have the speed of RAID 0. I would go with RAID 6 but I don't have a 5th drive nor my mobo would accept a 5th drive in a RAID config without removing the M.2 drive. I'm leaning more towards RAID 5 since this array is really just meant to hold 90% of the games I have which can be easily be re-downloaded on Steam. If I put anything else on there (probably not beside temp files, caches, etc) then that would be backed up daily.

Here's what I'm getting in terms of read/write speeds for various disks using CrystalDiskMark. I tried out RAID 0 and RAID 5. It seems like RAID 5 read speeds aren't that much better than an external USB 3.0 drive.

Mind that RAID limits the speed of all drives to the one with the slowest in the array and the capacity of all drives to the one with the smallest.

I'd suggest to individually benchmark all of the drives included in the array and then judge the array's performance by it. 

Also take into account that having different types of drives in a RAID array can also impact the performance of the array. That along with the controller and settings can make a big difference between a well performing RAID array and a poorly performing one. 

 

RAID5 loses a lot of performance during the calculation of the redundancy so it's normal to have lower write speeds.
