How to lower brightness if its already at 0% in monitor's OSD?

Krzych

Hi,

I have a bit of a problem. My monitor has quite poor brightness range, and while it is okay for gaming, for web browsing and reading it is too bright even at 0% brightness. I am already using Flux for web browsing at around 4200K, so whites are rather yellowish than actually white, but it is still too bright for web browsing at night even though I already have 0% brightness set in OSD.

Can I lower brightness even more with some software/system option? I know that many games have this feature, but I didn't find any options in control panel that could lower the overall brightness.

Thanks for any help,

Try in your graphics card driver program they usually have brightness settings you can change.

| Ryzen 7 3700x | 16GB Vengance @ 3200 | MSI GTX 1070Ti Gaming |

| ADATA XPG SX8000NP 256GB Nvme SSD + WD Blue 500GB SSD | 4TB WD Blue |

     | Corsair RM650x |

| NZXT H200 White |

Try using your Intel/Nvidia/Amd control panel to lower brightness. Or maybe look into replacing it if it's too bright even at 0%.

Nothing.

I am temporarily using Intel HD card until I get proper GPU on Monday and it indeed has brightness setting, but is not too good and different black levels are just blending together and I cannot see details on darker pictures in web browser. Monitor brightness settings doesn't do that if you lower the brightness, at least not that drastically. For reading it is perfect, but pictures and videos are quite seriously damaged. But it should do for now, hopefully AMD also has this setting available in drivers.

Does your monitor have a backlight setting. Normally don't touch the brightness and only adjust backlight.

I don't see such option in monitor's OSD or LG's OnScreen Control software, just brightness.

The should be some profiles in the monitor OSD like HOT, WARM, COOL, try that.

I want lower brightness, I already set warm colors for web browsing. Color profiles in OSD are always completely useless, I don't remember a single profile in all monitors I had so far that would be useful, all of them are just destroying picture by adding too much brightness, sharpness or too much of one color and this is only thing they do.

My eyes are quiet sensitive to strong brightness / backlight, and I have similar problem with not just white, but also other bright colors.

My solution to this problem is to have a small lamp (40W light bulb) pointing directly on my monitor. Monitor is set to 35% brightness, so I can see normally during daylight, but as soon as it starts getting dark, lamp comes on.

I am pretty sure you could at least try this solution.

My eyes are so used to it, that I refuse to use any screen in complete darkness.

So WARM is the best for you? I prefer COOL. Try adjusting the gamma. Still too bright, then grab a monitor filter lense. They go in front of your screen.

The other way is to just wear sunglasses. :P

Some ambient light surely helps, but I am having hard time with placing the light source properly. If I turn of the lamp on the wall like 1m above monitor, it distracts me. If I place any light behind me then I am getting reflections on monitor and this makes me increase the brightness and this is exactly opposite of what I need. Light from the side also distracts me. So I believe the conclusion is that I need to place the light source just behind the monitor, but will it actually give any results?

I doubt that placing a light source behind the monitor would help, as it would put the monitor in the shadow, and we want to avoid that, but you can certainly try it.

Here is a picture of my setup. http://imgur.com/p63rE0A (hopefully it works, disregard less than potato quality). Maybe try something like that.

Ok, problem solved. Brightness options in both Intel and AMD graphics panels are useless, because in fact they are not lowering brightness but actually they are editing black levels so dark images become unreadable. But AMD's contrast option works exactly like monitor's brightness settings, lowering the brightness without affecting colors and pictures by any other way than making them simply less bright and easier for eyes.

Also putting some light source behind monitor helped a lot, much more than placing it behind or on the side, because this caused either reflections on the screen or distractions.
