Google glass got hacked... hacked real hard...

http://www.npr.org/blogs/alltechconsidered/2013/07/17/202725167/clever-hacks-give-google-glass-many-unintended-powers

- wink to take pictures - yup, not good, also called it

- people already working on custom OS

- google cracking down hard, doubt it will stop them imo

- Stop being a douche, Stephen! “If I don’t do it, someone else will”

New Moto-X will actively listen to your voice commands

http://www.theverge.com/2013/7/14/4522054/moto-x-always-listening-voice-commands-new-notifications

Litens for voice commands just like google glass

Will this end up like xbox?
also displays notifications on screen when they come through

Super fast thunderbolt flash drive prototype by intel

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/36387-intel%E2%80%99s-prototypethunderbolt-flash-drive-puts-the-competition-to-shame/

- It can push speeds of up to 10 Gigabits per second, which is about twice as fast as USB 3.0 at its max potential

- Would we need other storage standards anymore?

- Is a massive single bus (remember next gen TB already planned at 20Gbit) enough for display, storage, etc etc etc etc etc? Not that diff from something hyper transport, but just more options for splitters, internal/external connectors etc....

Elon Musk’s Hyperloop might actually work?

http://www.theverge.com/2013/7/18/4534476/how-will-elon-musks-hyperloop-work

- 600Mph transportation between LA/SF

- Bullet Train tops out at ~360Mph (usually 300Mph)

- Maybe enclosed? Musk says it’s not a vaccum.

- Very low power (solar powered), low friction

- leaves whenever you arrive

- logistics of “right of way”

- All of this is “how will it work” so far, and no one has even started talking “how much will it cost”

Not Sure whether you want Sense or stock Android?

http://www.engadget.com/2013/07/12/modaco-switch-for-htc-one/?utm_medium=feed&utm_source=Feed_Classic&utm_campaign=Engadget

- Not released yet, so no idea how well it works

- takes up more space on your phone due to basically having elements from two versions of Android
- requires a reboot to switch between them

- BETA tester applications NOW OPEN

HBO asks Google to remove link to VLC

http://torrentfreak.com/hbo-asks-google-to-take-down-infringing-vlc-media-player-130715/

- um lol?

- probably innocent mistake, but how much damage can be done. Google de-prioritzes sites based on how many DMCA takedown notices they get. What if LTT all of a sudden got a takedown notice from HBO?

8 Character Password is no longer secure

http://deloitte.wsj.com/cio/2013/07/11/the-8-character-password-is-no-longer-secure/

- 4.1 quadrillion combinations... in theory...

- Because of human behaviour the 10,000 most common passwords would access more than 98% of accounts

- Average people have 25 accounts and only 5 passwords so re-use is a big problem.

- Latest virtualization software and powerful GPU can probably crack it in 5.5 hours.

- XKCD

Edward Snowden has “guide” that could be used to evade the NSA or deploy something similar

http://worldnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/07/15/19481148-reporter-snowden-has-instruction-manual-for-how-the-nsa-is-built?lite&ocid=msnhp&pos=7

- Doesn’t want it revealed

- Blowing whistle on NSA, but is he more concerned about replication, or avoidance with this document?

Adobe, you’re too big for this. Grow up.

http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

Why does my download of flash player come with other crap. I already know Chrome is awesome. It’s one thing when like... Daemon Tools does it (mind you theirs is REALLY obnoxious) but this is a very unfortunate busines practice and it feels like “pay for software” companies should rise above it.

Ivy Bridge E benchmarked by Tom’s

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/core-i7-4960x-ivy-bridge-e-benchmark,3557.html

- Big surprise

- Actually no surprise

- More efficient, no 8 core (SERIOUSLY INTEL? NO 8 CORE???)

- ….

HTC One Mini coming soon

http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/07/small-hands-rejoice-htc-unveils-the-one-mini/

- 4.3” 720p, Pretty mundane specs 1.4GHz dual core Qualcomm, 1GB RAM,

- Ultrapixel camera

- Zoe + blinkfeed + Sense 5

Microsoft Worth Down, Surface Tablet Might Be Reason

http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-is-getting-destroyed-today-2013-7

http://slashdot.org/story/13/07/19/0122223/microsoft-is-sitting-on-six-million-unsold-surface-tablets?utm_source=rss1.0mainlinkanon&utm_medium=feed

- down 11.4%

- maybe to do with the 6 million (estimated) tablets that they’ve written down by $150 ea

- 900M total

- Is this because Microsoft wasn’t ready to be a hardware company? Because of Win8? Because of “

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/36835-samsung-unveils-1tb-840-evo-solid-state-drive/

- TLC toggle @ 10nm(ish), next generation MEX controller

- 120/250/500/750/1TB

- much better perf. with small capacity devices (who can afford a 500GB SSD?)
- specs look much closer to 840pro than 840. Maybe M4 pricing? Who knows.

AMD lost 74 Million.

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/37129-amdlost-74-million/

- Anticipates 20% revenue from consoles in Q3

- anticipates return to profitability in Q3

- Shows some of the desperation that was “never settle” (why hasn’t NVIDIA reacted??)

AMD throwing punches with FX9590

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/36302-fx-9590-surprisingly-efficient-at-5ghz/?hl=9590

- As justification for the huge price bump between the two new chips, look at Intel’s segmentation at the very high end

- AMD is the one who started all of this with the FX, so we have them to blame for $1000 processors, but at least this is a bit lower

- Who is this for???

Apple just lost access to 300M customers

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/36501-apple-has-just-lost-300m-customers/

- You can only act like a big shot when you’re a big shot...

- Jobs was a big shot...

JellyGrade, calling themselves “recovering ex-AAA game developers.”

- iPad first, then hopefully PC

Oculus Rift will NOT be available on next gen consoles

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/35839-oculus-rift-will-not-be-available-on-next-generation-consoles/

- Anyone with an ounce of sense probably saw this coming

- 3D Vision requires significantly more processing power, so Oculus will not be an exception

- LOL OWNED

Xbox One might upgrade it’s hardware???

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/35917-microsoft-might-upgrade-the-xbox-ones-hardware/

- This was unlikely to begin with...

- 8GB to 12GB sounds like something that someone non-technical would have come up with...

iPhone death

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/36031-apple-to-investigate-reported-iphone-5-shock-death/

- Apple says they will cooperate with the authorities to investigate the issue

- Family is denying the use of any conterfeit products

- Rumours that she was in the bath or something like that.

- FOLLOW UP - Now looks related to 3rd party charger: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57594449-37/iphone-related-death-in-china-could-be-linked-to-fake-charger/

Remote anti-virus USB stick strives to save the day

https://twitter.com/Jeeverz/status/357698592347131904

Accesses your computer through linux so windows virus’ cant stop it

calls out to a server which remotely cleans it

wham bam you’re done, very clean interface and easy to use

not surprised, we have had remote AV for a while someone just took it to the next logical level

- Has been funded, now we just need finished product. Sounds like the kind of thing I’d buy actually...

- VISAs easier

JK Rowling uses pseudonym to write mystery novel

Initial speculation: http://www.theverge.com/2013/7/14/4522398/harry-potter-author-j-k-rowling-secretly-releases-detective-novel

- crime writer Robert Galbraith The Cuckoo’s Calling
- difference between ghost writing and pseudonyms
- Nancy Drew books “Carolyn Keene” obviously a team of writers, not one person.

- Marketing tactic or genuinely wanted to keep it a secret?

- Basically fessed up to it right away when called on it, but already positive reviews so maybe the point is proven?

Follow Up showing how it happened: http://www.businessinsider.com/how-jk-rowlings-pseudonym-was-revealed-2013-7

EA Moment of the week

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/36070-prepare-to-laugh/

- Would you recommend Origin to a friend :(

- What would someone have to do to you for you to be mad enough at them to recommend a game that’s available on both platforms be bought through Origin vs STEAM?

Have you thought about bringing Tiny Tom Logan onto the show? I know it would be a late night for him, BUT you could talk about hardware and make it more of a modding show....

I know the PC fans won't really be interested in this topic but, I was hoping that you would discuss the possibilities of the Wii U. Now that Call of Duty: Ghosts has been confirmed for it, what other games do you reckon Nintendo will bring. I myself have only used the device only once, however I did enjoy the experience of the gameplay. Yes I know that it isn't 60fps, but I'm more interested in different forms of interaction in gameplay.

What are everyone else's thoughts? Do you reckon the Wii U has a chance to grow? Or is it just a waste of time?
