How hot is too hot for a CPU

It's summer. The air is hot and the pc gets crazy hot. What temp is considered to be too hot for a CPU? I'm trying to figure out if my CPU is overheating. Thanks in advance guys.

A CPU should not get hotter than 100 degrees celsius although higher temps can be sustained for limited amounts of time. Haswell for example should be able to tolerate 110 while Ivy Bridge could tolerate 105.

 

It should be noted that you should sustain as minimal a temperature as possible with good ventilation throughout the case as other parts can fail at lesser or greater temperatures.

 

Remember, your PC is only as good as it's weakest part.

I want to add that Intel does have temperature specs for each processor. The steps can be found in the FAQ here.

Wrong, wrong, and wrong

 

Intel CPUs have a max core temp of over 90C(the point where they start throttling), but you should keep them in the 70C-80C range.

I prefer to keep my i7 2700K in the high 60s but it should not be damaged even at 80C+

 

it will help if you tell us exactly what CPU you have.

I am not sure about AMD CPUs.

OP - If you're running Haswell try to keep your temps below 90 C while under full load. Try to keep them below 80.  What type of temps are you getting?

For AMD CPUs, I think it's around 62 degrees C. At least before throttling begins.

every cpu got his max temp like
core i5 4670k his max temp is 72

just google it and you will find some good answers

for me the max temp is 76

My rule is to not cross 85c.

I would keep it under 80 degrees just to be safe and avoid throttling.
