How to clean GPU circuit board without isopropyl alcohol or pressure-air in a can?

Guest

I suppose a tooth brush would work as well as long as its clean, dry and not too hard. -.-

Yeah I'm lazy and selling the card for 50 euro so. :P

Because I don't have those 2 things and frankly I find it amusing that everybody expects everybody to have those things in the house.

How do I clean the dust of off the circuit board of a GPU without those things? Because it's a very thin layer but it won't go away, and I will be selling the GPU tomorrow so I want it to look perfect too.

We don't. Just go to Walmart and buy canned air it's cheap

Well okay, I tried using the anti-static bag to brush it off but it was really slow going.

Don't do this... only the inside of an anti static bag is anti static, the outside is very conductive and should not come on contact with your stuff.

If spending the 6$ on a can of air isnt worth preserving your XXXX$ machine, then a sturdy, soft paintbrush should work. Ive also heard of people using a small straw poked into a tennis ball and squeezing the ball to blow off dust.

No, it's not my machine, it's an HD7870 which I am selling, it's precisely 2 years old now.

And what if I used the inside of the bag?...... :o

At least the inside is non conductive. I wouldnt say its very optimal but at least it wont short anything out.

The thing is I assume you have a pc that this came out of which is also dusty, so its worth the investment.

A little dusty but not too much. I might just tell the buyer to clean that small layer himself. :)

It depends on the paintbrush. Some of them can conduct electricity; potentially killing your card in the process. I personally though have used and recommended anti static brushes since the past year without any problems, and suggest you giving them a shot too :)

Edit: I see a lot of people recommending canned air. If the PCB itself has greyened because of dust, a little air blowing cross it won't help; not even the very least. Canned air is great if the dust has not literally glued itself to the component, which if it has, leaves you with two options- get a brush and start scrubbing, or dose the full thing in water.

Go get some and do it properly. If you can't then put it on your parents shopping list.

Hey.. Do you have a madic kit on your house.. Try to look at it. You cloud find polyvinyl alcohol or something that may contain 95% to 99% alcohol.. If not buy it.
