Why so low FPS in Minecraft?

Jay123

I used to have a Phenom II x4 965 @4Ghz, a HD 6570 and 8GB of 1333Mhz RAM and I was getting around 80 FPS on Minecraft. I recently updated to a HD 7850 and I'm now getting 40FPS, WTF has happened?

All driver are updated.

I cannot explain what happened, but try to dowbload the OptiFine mod. It increases your FPS quite a bit. But an since you have an FPS on above 30, you dont have to worry. Most people wont see that you have a low framerate until drop to below 25-30 FPS.

Did you try a clean install of drivers (I know you said they are updated but this has worked for me in the past, yes anecdotal).

And I think most gamers can tell the difference between 40fps and 60 fps stefan.

Thanks everyone, I am using 64 bit Java, I've tried a fresh install of drivers and Minecraft and I want more than 40 FPS because I wish to install the Unbelievable Shaders Mod which will probably take me down to 1 FPS!

(Optifine made no difference)

Make sure you disable vsync in catalyst control.

Seems it could cause trouble otherwise.

Go through Catalyst Control Center and bring all the options in 3D Application Settings down to their minimum. With the new driver install, something may have been set too high that doesn't run well with minecraft.

Also check the minecraft video options.

You may want to try a fresh vanilla game install to play around with the settings.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Minecraft is a hard game to run... a 6450 will not do.

I run Minecraft with Optifine and GLSL DoF shaders, and I have to dedicate a 8gb java heap to ensure 60fps while recording with fraps! It's very hard to run smoothly with the shaders mod, not just vanilla minecraft! I spent about 30 minutes tweaking optifine graphics settings to get a smoother gameplay, some options you think will help just make performance worse, I can post them here if you would like to have a look? :)

Drivers from AMDs website and the FPS stays roughly the same whatever settings I use. It's really weird.

Rawr. 12.11 or 12.10? Far/Far+128 or extreme? Confirm with CPU-Z that you are still @4Ghz. We need all the detail you can provide bro.

Did you put Vsync on in Minecraft? Cause Vsync makes you slow down

Check Minecraft's settings, more specifically the FPS setting, don't have it set for "power saving". My 550Ti destroys minecraft, so your 7850 should do even better

Old shit no one cares about but me.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys but I've literally been faffing about for hours and have checked all of your suggestions multiple times. I think I might have to forget about the shaders mod :(

It still seems odd to have such low performance, how much RAM are you allocating? This can affect FPS as much as your GPU, especially when running hi-res textures, increased view distance and additional shaders.
