How is AMD these days?

So I've been a die hard team green for nearly 20 years. With the new cards on the horizon I wanted to reach out to team red and see how AMD's card function these days. 

My biggest grip over the years has been AMD's drivers and it always seemed you had to poke around to find a version that was stable with your machine. 

So I'm not looking for flaming wars,  Just some nice discussion to help me see AMD's side of things cause I've been in nVidia's space for so long.

AMD had a normally rocky start to their Navi launch, but as of 6 months ago, they went really heavy into fixing the majority of problems with their drivers. Right now, they're on par with Nvidia for stability, but use a better interface.

 

No telling what performance differences there will be when Big Navi launches, but it should be competitive with the RTX 3000 series.

The only reason i switched to NVidia from AMD is because i had 2 AMD cards die on me in relatively shore amount of time.

AMD has came a long way over the years and I have high hopes for Big Navi 2. Obviously the smartest thing to do is wait for the reviews and benchmarks, but  if it even comes close to the performance of the 3080 then Nvidia is in trouble considering the $549 price tag. We shall wait and see. I'm buying one or the other.

I have an xfx rx590. It does its job but at a temp of 80 with custom fancurve and good airflow... You could say that these temps are normal, but idk, its too hot for my taste. Untouched the temps will go up to 90 degrees...

 

The most thing that troubles me is the noise. Its so noisy that I sometimes think that my pc would explode.

Yeah, I'm not in a position to buy just yet. So I have time on my side but I do know these cards are my next upgrade. Currently running a 1060. 

I just wanted to open my options and see how AMD was doing. I'm not kidding when I say I've been nVidia for nearly 20 years. So I have no background with AMD

My hdd6670 was a seamless experience. The rx vega 56 is not. It works when it counts most. It never gave me DP problems when playing a game.

 

It does however have small bugs.

 

Had some of that. I've come to accept that my GPU has a shitty DP interface that [will be laggy for 3-5 seconds before failing and reconnecting] after being left idle for a while (weird but true). A stable version from Feb fixed that. 

Every future stable version brought it back.

 

 

Radeon relive suit is amazing and way beyond Nvidia's Shadowplay from 2-3 years ago.

Some problems include radeon's OC utility's interface failing to allow modification after loading profiles, forgetting all my app specific profiles. The performance hit is near 0 at 4k60 recording and the quality/filesize ratio is excellent.

 

The most major bug whilst playing was massive multi second input lag with BF5's future frame rendering on. It seems to occur most of all on the most gpu intensive maps. There really isn't a fix with changing anti-lag, and v sync. If you turn future frame rending off there's no problem as you lose a few fps (which usually does nothing since I'm capped at 60hz) from having it off. It looks like a massive bug from the driver, API, and game engine pipeline.

edit: this problem appeared 1 or 2 months ago and reverting to stable driver didn't fix it so it could be the Bf5 update aswell.

 

Stable drivers are rare and far between compared with Nvidia. I stick with stable drivers. Also AMD calls beta "optional" and defaults you to it so we can be its guiny pigs >:(.

 

Also the rx 56vega beats 2000$ nvidia gpus in mining ETH... lol

My last AMD Card had just 2GB of VRam lol.  Thats how long ago i used AMD.

This is what drove me away from AMD. I had 1 card, 10 years ago (can't remember which AMD card it was) and it was a driver nightmare. I love that NVidia drivers seem to make their cards better, even older cards. That's been my issue with AMD's video cards. Funny cause I jumped into AMD CPU's for the first time in 20 years with my new rebuild. (800mhz Athon 64bit was the last time I used one)

I guess you can liken AMD to a modified/ hot rod car. You have to manage the weirdness to keep it running well.
